Lillian looked at the two stubborn guards, her gaze hardening. “Fine. If you want to throw your lives away, don’t blame me for being heartless.” With a flick of her wrist, a flash of blue light darted from her fingertips. Before they could even register what was happening, both men collapsed.
Stepping over their unconscious bodies, Lillian rantically searched them until she found the keycard. She swiped it, the door hissed open, and she sprinted inside to the cell where Leonard was being held.
“Lillian? What are you doing here?” Leonard asked, rising quickly as she burst in.
“There’s no time to explain,” she said breathlessly. “We have to go. The base is on fire, and it’ll reach this wing any minute. We need to leave now.”
“A fire?” Leonard gasped.
Lillian grabbed his arm, guiding him toward the exit. “Yes, the whole facility is going up. We have to move, or we’re not making it out.”
As they reached the threshold of the cell block, Leonard glanced back. “Wait! There are others trapped here too. We can’t just leave them.” He made a move to turn back.
Lillian caught his shoulder, checking the hallway and then the encroaching smoke. “Stay here,” she commanded. “I’ll get them.” She ran back down the corridor, swiping the card and throwing open the remaining doors. “Fire! Get out now! Run!”
By the time she had freed the last of the captives, thick, black smoke had already begun to choke the corridor. Lillian hurried back to Leonard, and the group began their frantic escape, weaving through a sea of panicked staff and guards.
They reached the elevator bay, and Lillian swiped the card, the light for the lift finally flickering on. She watched the floor indicator with bated breath as it descended.
Suddenly, Lynette appeared from around the corner, flanked by several armed guards. She sneered when she saw Lillian and Leonard together. “The boss told me to watch out for you. I see you really were planning to smuggle this old man out.”
Lillian glanced at the elevator and then back at the woman. “Lynette, I don’t have time for your games. You know exactly what’s happening. In five minutes, this entire floor will be an oven. If we don’t leave now, nobody gets out alive.”
Lynette’s eyes flashed with malice. “Leave? You’re quite the dreamer. I’ll tell you the truth- the boss ordered me to take care of you and the old man right here. Did you really think you were getting away? You’ve always been so arrogant; let’s see how that serves you now.” She
