The words had barely left Gray’s mouth before a savage backhand caught him across the face. “You absolute moron!” George roared. “I told you to investigate Lillian. How did you fail to find out who her fiancé was?”

Gray clutched his stinging cheek, looking bewildered and hurt. “Sir, you only told me to dig into the connection between the girl and Leonard. You never said anything about a fiancé.”

George pointed a trembling finger at him, his teeth gritted in rage. “Calling you stupid is an insult to stupid people. Do you have any idea that your incompetence has brought a god of death to my doorstep? If this isn’t handled perfectly, the entire Mildew Corp could be dragged down with us.”

“Surely it isn’t that serious,” Gray muttered cautiously. “She’s just a college student, isn’t she?”

“Bullshit!” George bellowed. “She is the fiancée of the Chairman of Empire Group in Dracovia.”

Gray froze, his eyes wide with shock. “What? That’s impossible.”

“Is it?” George snapped. “The man is already here in person, and he’s dead certain that I’m the one who took her.”

“What do we do now? Maybe we should just let the girl go,” Gray whispered, panic beginning to set in. He knew enough about Empire Group to know their Chairman was a ruthless predator–the kind of man who could ruin a person without ever getting blood on his hands.

George’s eyes turned stone–cold. “Let her go? Do you think that’s an option? I went through hell to get her here; I’m not just going to release her.

“Besides, I’ve already given a flat denial to his face. There is no turning back now. The girl has already started her research for me, and I refuse to let all that effort go to waste.”

“But what if he doesn’t let this go?” Gray asked anxiously.

George stared off into the distance, his gaze dark and predatory. “He has no concrete evidence yet, so he can’t touch me. As long as he can’t find her, he’ll eventually give up and leave. My only concern right now is that he’ll come for you, since you were the one who conducted the initial investigation.”

“Then what should I do?” Gray asked, his voice trembling.

“Hide,” George said coldly. “Disappear for a while and don’t come back until the dust settles. And remember–the further away you go, the better.”

“Yes, sir. I understand,” Gray replied quickly.

Meanwhile, at the research base.

Lillian stood before the laboratory equipment, her focus entirely on the solution inside a glass vessel.

After a day of quiet observation, she had noticed that the guards in black operated in two shifts, monitoring everyone’s movements around the clock.
