Uriel frowned slightly. "This can't go on. I'm going to talk to him." With that, she stood up abruptly.

Derrick paused, setting down his cutlery. He wiped the corners of his mouth and said flatly, "Leave him be. It's not necessarily a bad thing for him to bury himself in work right now. At least it keeps his mind occupied. In time, he might slowly come around. Lilian only just vanished, and with her fate completely up in the air, it's bound to be a lot for him to process. If enough time passes and there's still no sign of her, he might finally learn to let go."

Uriel looked at him, her eyes flashing with anger. "Do you honestly think that's possible? Lilian means more to Sebastian than his own life. Now she's missing and her life is on the line all because of him. Do you truly believe he can just move on? I can tell you right now, if Sebastian never finds her, he will never get over this for the rest of his life. Letting go is completely out of the question. Don't you know your own son? Once he sets his heart on someone, that's it. He'll sooner spend the rest of his days entirely alone."

"But going up there to reason with him won't change anything either. He won't listen to a single word from anyone right now," Derrick said quietly.

Anxiety clouded Uriel's eyes. "Even so, we can't just let him run himself into the ground like this. He'll collapse before we even find her." Without another word, she turned and headed straight for the stairs.

The moment she reached the second floor and pushed open the study door, her heart ached terribly.

The man was leaning back in his chair with his eyes tightly shut. He was dangerously pale, and in just a few short days, he had grown incredibly gaunt, looking entirely devoid of life. Watching her son in this state, she couldn't help but wonder if he would simply live out the remainder of his days as a hollow shell if Lilian really was gone for good.
