Lilian’s lips curled into a cold smirk. “People usually like to settle scores where they lost them. She was humiliated right here in Dracovia so of course she would want her revenge on this soil. Still this is just a theory for now. We don’t have any hard evidence.”

Sebastian and Derrick exchanged a look. “You’re onto something” Sebastian said. “Even without proof I will have Foster keep an eye on Renee. If it is her she will definitely trip up sooner or later.”

The next day Jared was floored when he heard Derrick was back. He hadn’t held out much hope so seeing his younger brother actually return was a shock.

In the hospital room.

Jared watched the old man sitting in bed calmly reading the newspaper. “Dad there is something I need to tell you.”

Greg glanced at his son’s hesitant expression. “Just say it. You have been hovering and acting strange all morning. Get to the point.”

Jared took a deep breath. “I will tell you but you have to stay calm. The doctors were very clear about you avoiding any stress or excitement right now.”

Greg gave him a dry look. “Enough. Just spit it out. I know my own body and I am recovering just fine. Stop acting like I am made of glass. Back in my day…”

“Right right. Let’s not start with the back in my day stories again” Jared interrupted knowing Greg could go on for hours once he started. He steadied himself and spoke carefully. “Derrick is back.”

Greg froze instantly. “Who did you say is back?”

“Derrick. Your son Derrick. He is home” Jared repeated watching his father’s face closely.

Greg’s breathing grew heavy and his gaze turned distant. He gripped the newspaper so hard the pages crinkled and he began scanning the bedside table as if looking for something but not knowing what.

“Dad are you okay?” Jared asked nervously. “What are you looking for? Tell me and I will get it.”

Greg stopped moving and looked at Jared his voice trembling with uncertainty. “You are sure? You are saying Derrick is really

back?”

Jared nodded. “Yeah he is here. He wanted to come see you straight away but Sebastian stopped him. He was worried the shock might be too much for you while you are still healing so he wanted me to give you a heads up first.”

Greg took a long shaky breath forcing himself to settle. “Go on out for a bit” he said quietly. “I need a moment to myself.”

Jared saw that his father looked calm on the surface. “Alright. I will be right outside. Call me if you need anything.” He turned and

walked out.

As soon as the door clicked shut Greg covered his eyes with his shaking hands. Tears began to leak through his fingers. He didn’t make a sound but the sheer grief and relief radiating from him was palpable. How many years had he waited to hear those words?
