Jackson had just come in from outside when he spotted Arthur slipping out of Morris’s room, a goofy, lovestruck grin plastered all over his face. Jackson’s mood soured in an instant. He called out, “Arthur, weren’t you and that brat always at each other’s throats? What are you doing coming out of his room?”
Arthur paused, thinking it over. “Uncle, I’ve been rethinking things. Sure, Nathan can be a bit sharp with his words, and he’s not exactly warm to us, but honestly, he’s never done us any real harm. Plus, he’s seriously talented. Why would I go out of my way to make him my enemy?”
Jackson let out a sly, almost menacing laugh. “Arthur, you’re still young. You don’t know how to read people yet. Some folks act all chill and above it all, but deep down, they’re full of tricks. You better keep your guard up, or one day he’s going to snatch that heir’s seat right from under you.”
A cool voice interrupted, “Are you talking about yourself?” No one had noticed Morris rolling out in his wheelchair. He stopped right in front of Jackson, his expression as cold as ice, the kind of steady calm that made Jackson look downright feeble.
Jackson’s face twisted awkwardly. “Please, like I’d bother fighting you kids over money or status.”
Morris shot him a warning look. “You’d better stick to that.”
With a huff, Jackson turned and stormed off.
Arthur tried to break the tension with a laugh. “Morris, you’ve got Uncle all wrong. He’s the most laid-back guy in the family. Business stuff totally bores him.”
Morris just shook his head and sighed. “I can’t decide if you’re clueless or just hopelessly naive.”
He didn’t bother with Arthur anymore, just started wheeling himself toward the door.
Arthur called after him, worried, “Morris, where are you going?”
“The Stewart place.”
