Cameron’s eyes welled up, a sharp ache hollowing out his chest until he couldn’t even think straight.
“How could she be with Morris? Doesn’t she realize—Morris is the reason our family got ripped apart!” Cameron rambled on, his voice thick with pain and disbelief. “Didn’t Almos tell me she got her memory back? So why won’t she come back to me?”
“Nell, I’ve waited for you all this time. Are you seriously never coming back?” His eyes shone with a desperate, stubborn hope.
Nina sighed, her voice soft and worn. “Dad, Almos didn’t lie. Mom really did get her memories back. But if she hasn’t come back to you, it means she’s moved on. She’s let go.”
Suddenly, Cameron exploded. “She can’t just betray me! I waited for her… all these years!”
Nina stared at him, dumbfounded. “So just because you waited, she owes it to you to come back?”
She shook her head, her words biting. “Did you ever think about how you hurt her? How, for Greta, you broke Mom’s heart again and again? Even a simple creature knows to avoid pain. Mom already died once—died horribly. Did you really think she’d live through all that and just come running back for more?”
A loud slap echoed as Cameron struck Nina across the face, his anger boiling over.
“You’re our daughter. You should stand by us. But you’re taking Morris’s side! I don’t need a daughter who can’t tell right from wrong!”
Nina pressed a trembling hand to her cheek, tears streaming down. “You always do this. You hurt everyone around you just to get your way. Mom left you without a second thought, and now you’re going to push me away too?”
“Go. I don’t need you,” Cameron snapped.
Sobbing, Nina ran from the room, clutching her face.
Cameron sank to the floor, burying his head in his hands as he broke down and cried.
