unharmed, he let out a breath. “Ms. Wilson, are you all right?”

“I’m fine.” Sydney stepped aside to let him pass.

As she moved, the edge of her vision caught Penelope’s pale face. Nothing stirred in her. She simply turned to thank the officer.” Perfect timing. We’re done talking anyway. Sorry for the trouble.”

Moments earlier, Penelope had still been shouting, her voice clashing with the rattle of chains and the scrape of the chair.

Sydney had not caught every word. She did not want to. If she listened any longer, she feared she would lose what little composure she had left.

As soon as Sydney stepped out of the interview room, she ran into Peter hurrying toward her. “Ms. Wilson!”

He had watched her grow up. One look told him something was wrong. “Did Penelope say something awful to you?”

“No.” Sydney forced a smile and shook her head. “I’m just a little tired. Let’s go home first.”

But when she reached the familiar black Bentley, the rear door suddenly opened from inside.

Sydney lowered her gaze and saw the man seated in the back. He still wore the same dark patterned suit from that morning. His black eyes remained fixed on her.

bully you?”

Amoment ago, Sydney had truly felt tired. Now, she could not help but smile. “Do I really look that easy to bully?”

As she spoke, he shifted to make room beside him. Sydney slid in without hesitation.

“Fair point.” Julian took her hand and nodded with quiet approval. “You’re not

Sy to bully.”

She had followed him since childhood, always a step behind, always learning by watching him.

Sydney glanced at him. The warmth of his hand steadied her, and the turmoil inside her began to ease. “When did you get here? Why didn’t you come in to find me?”

Julian’s voice stayed low and even. “If you need me to go in, I will.”

He knew she had not needed him yet. And if she wanted to handle something on her own, he would not step in lightly.

Sydney brushed her thumb over the web of his hand. After a brief pause, she spoke softly. “There is something I do need your help with.”

Fear lingered, but Jeremiah and Penelope had already pushed things this far. If she did not uncover the truth, she did not know how she would face the Hutton family afterward.

Julian closed his fingers around her thumb, his tone calm. “Tell me.”

Sydney gathered her thoughts. “Can you help me check whether the top public security official in Brimcrest, back then, had any ties to the Huttons?”

The Huttons’ influence ran too deep. If she investigated openly on her own, she would never uncover anything useful.

“Back then? How far back?”

“The year I was brought into the Sterling family,” Sydney said.
