Chapter 680
A sudden chill ran through Sydney, as if the cold from outside had seeped into her blood and left every inch of her body cold. 1
She had no way to tell whether Penelope was telling the truth or lying. She only knew the words were like a poisoned needle. They struck with precise accuracy and pried open the suspicion she had worked so hard to
suppress.
Penelope and Jeremiah likely did not even know each other, yet what they said matched exactly.
Could it be that the Hutton family had really played a part in that murder? And if they held that kind of power, did that mean they had long known the truth about her identity?
‘Then all the kindness they’ve shown me… Is it guilt, or is it real?’
Sydney’s nails dug into her palms, leaving red marks. The sharp pain pulled her back to a thread of reason.
“A mistake?” She rose abruptly, leaned forward slightly, and looked down at Penelope. Her voice was unexpectedly calm. “Penelope, do you take me for a child? If you think two vague lines can buy your freedom, you’re dreaming. Either make yourself clear or sit here and wait for sentencing like everyone else.”
She enunciated every word.
Without giving Penelope a moment to think, she turned and headed for the door.
“Sydney!” Panicked, Penelope called after her on instinct, but she still did not dare meet Sydney’s eyes. “If I tell you everything right now, how do I know you won’t turn around and abandon me? I have to leave myself a way out.
11
How could she agree to reveal the whole truth so easily? Even so, she had not expected Sydney to be this difficult
to sway.
Sydney was stubborn, just like Julian.
The thought of Sydney having everything now, a career, a family, and a powerful backing, made Penelope grind her teeth so hard they almost cracked.
Her lowered gaze swept across Sydney’s rounded belly, and the hatred in her chest surged again.
Why? Why was the world so unfair? Sydney was clearly favored by God. Then what was she? Something the world could discard at will? Did her child deserve to vanish so easily into blood and nothingness?
No. She had to get out of this hellhole. Who would have the last laugh remained uncertain.
Sydney looked at her frantic, guilty expression and let out a short, humorless laugh.
“Do you need a way out, or do you simply have no real evidence? Or maybe you never planned to tell me at all? Penelope, use your head. You’re the one asking me for help. Her eyes were cold and sharp. “If you have no sincerity, what exactly are you bargaining with?”
She turned and walked away.
“Wait!” Penelope panicked and lurched to her feet. The handcuffs clanged against the back of the chair. “Who said I don’t have proof? I can tell you. I can tell you everything right now!”
“You don’t need to!”
