Once a Doormat Now Untouchable (Caleb and Sydney) novel Chapter 677

Chapter 677

Jeremiah was an old fox. He caught her hesitation at once and spoke in a grave, measured tone. “This matter is too serious. Too many people are involved. No one would hand over the evidence to me lightly. Give me a little time, and I will show it to you. I was old friends with your father and mother. I would never joke about something like this. Besides, what would I gain by lying to you?”

Sydney lowered her eyes and concealed every trace of emotion. She sat in silence for a long time, deep in thought.

When she finally looked back at him, her gaze was cool and distant. “No matter what, I won’t believe any of this unless I see the

evidence.”

With that, she did not wait for him to speak again. She picked up her bag and strode out, leaving only one sentence behind.”

Have a nurse remove the needles in 35 minutes.”

Marcus had readily agreed to let her return to the clinic, but in practice, he blocked any additional appointments for her. Her work hours were much shorter than before.

Sydney could accept that. She was already in the middle to late stage of pregnancy, and sitting too long was not good for her. This schedule suited her well.

As she stepped out of Lumosa Clinic, she instinctively headed toward the parking lot to find her car.

She had barely turned when Peter called out to her, “Miss?”

Only then did she remember that Julian, unable to relax, had arranged for someone to drive her.

“Peter.” She tapped her forehead and walked over. “I completely forgot you’d be here to pick me up.”

Peter opened the car door for her and joked, “Mr. Sterling guessed you would. That’s why he urged me to come over an hour ago.

་་

Sydney smiled. She bent and got into the car. Once Peter settled into the driver’s seat, she said, “I’ll have to trouble you for the next two or three months.”

“What trouble?” Peter started the car and grinned. “You’ve always been easygoing and kind. We all prefer working with you.”

So who was the difficult one?

A certain face rose in Sydney’s mind. Her smile deepened. With deliberate intent, she said, “I’ll tell Julian you were complaining about him.”

“My dear Miss, if you say that, I’m dead.” Peter knew she was teasing, but he still begged for mercy. “It’s not that we dislike him. It’s just that none of us can ever guess what he’s thinking. Especially back when you two had just started talking again over the past two years. His moods were all over the place. He would brood over nothing.”

Sydney’s thoughts shifted. Perhaps that was because she used to needle him whenever they spoke.

Then, as if something occurred to her, she asked, “Peter, in earlier years, did the Huttons have a lot of influence in political circles?”

“Earlier years?” Peter did not think much of it. “You mean before Ms. Diana entered politics?”

Sydney nodded. “Yes.”

“Of course they did.” Peter explained, “The Hutton family didn’t have anyone directly in politics back then, but many of Mr. Albus’ former subordinates had already moved into government posts. And they were not minor positions.”

After he finished, the person in the back seat did not respond for a long moment. He glanced at the rearview mirror and sensed that something was off about Sydney’s expression.

Had he said something wrong?

“Miss, what’s wrong?”

“Nothing.” Sydney came back to herself. “I just got curious all of a sudden.”

She did not believe Jeremiah. But whether she liked it or not, he had planted the first seed of doubt.
