Once a Doormat Now Untouchable (Caleb and Sydney) novel Chapter 676

Chapter 676

Maybe Sydney’s reaction was too calm, because Jeremiah looked faintly surprised. Still, he did not rush to speak. He simply asked her to treat him first.

“My cough has gotten much worse lately. I’ll have to trouble you to take a look.”

“Of course.”

Sydney had taken over Jeremiah’s treatment partly out of respect for the Shepard family. The only reason it had paused recently was that she had been unable to reach him.

After examining him, she wrote a new prescription and adjusted his treatment plan.

When she finished with the day’s patients, she had him lie down on the exam bed in the consultation room and began the acupuncture session.

As Sydney inserted the first needle, Jeremiah showed no sign of discomfort. Instead, he struck up a casual conversation. “Dr. Wilson, what do you think of the Hutton family?”

“The Hutton family?”

Her hand paused for a fraction of a second. She did not know why he had suddenly brought them up. Still, she resumed placing the needles and answered in general terms. “They’re very good people”

Florence, Diana, and the brothers, as well as Albus and Elizabeth, had all treated her well.

As for Theodore, Sydney felt he lacked a clear sense of right and wrong. From Megan’s point of view, however, he was fiercely protective.

In a way, Sydney even envied that. If her own father could have protected her like that…..

“Very good people?” Jeremiah seemed to smile. “They do have a good reputation on the surface. Albus is known for his integrity. Diana has already surpassed the previous generation. Elizabeth is devoted to charity and has helped countless people.”

Then his tone shifted. “But behind the scenes, plenty of people have their doubts.”

Sydney no longer felt inclined to continue the conversation. Compared with what outsiders said, she preferred to trust what she had seen herself.

But Jeremiah did not seem to notice her displeasure. “This time, when I went abroad, I met some old friends. That’s when I learned that what happened to your adoptive parents back then was tied to the Hutton family.”

Sydney’s heart tightened. “What did you say?”

Jeremiah’s voice turned cold, as if he truly felt wronged on behalf of her adoptive parents. “The reason they died in the line of duty was that the Hutton family abused its power for personal gain.

“The operation they were involved in was highly classified and carefully planned. Under normal circumstances, they should have come back alive.

“However, someone leaked your adoptive father’s undercover identity, along with the operation plan, to the traffickers in advance. That led directly to both of them dying in the line of duty.”

“So you mean…” Sydney finished placing the needles and set her tools aside. Her expression revealed nothing as she followed his line of thought. “The Hutton family leaked the information?”

As she spoke, she kept her eyes fixed on Jeremiah’s face, not missing a single change in expression.

He could tell she was suspicious. Instead of taking offense, he asked bluntly, “Would you believe me if I said yes?”

Sydney’s mind churned, but her composure held. She smiled faintly and went straight to the point. “If there’s evidence, I’ll believe it.”

She knew the world was not so simple. People did get sacrificed in struggles for power. Even so, she still wanted to believe the Hutton family would never cross a line like an anti-drug operation. A family without principles could never have raised children like Diana and Raymond.

Jeremiah did not seem offended. “Of course I saw evidence. Otherwise, I would never have come to tell you.”

Sydney’s fingers tightened in her palm. She did not know what she was afraid of. Maybe it was this. After so many years, aside from Alan, Eliana, and Tiffany, she had finally found new people she could trust.

But if Jeremiah was telling the truth, things could never go back to how they were with Florence and the others. They might even become enemies. 1
