Chapter 678
Sydney had just forced herself to calm down and stop spiraling when her phone rang in her bag.
The caller ID showed the Jouleston City Police Department.
Puzzled, she answered. “Hello?”
“Hello.” A young male voice came through, brisk and official. “This is the Jouleston Police Department. Are you a family member of Penelope Monroe?”
At the mention of Penelope’s name, Sydney frowned. “No. You have the wrong person.”
“You’re Ms. Sydney Wilson, correct?”
The officer had just begun confirming her identity when another tense, urgent voice cut in. “Sydney, I know I did a lot wrong before. I know you won’t acknowledge me as your sister-in-law, but do you remember the message I sent you last time? I wasn’t lying. I really do know I was wrong. Can we meet? Please?”
It was Penelope.
Sydney had been about to hang up, but as her finger hovered over the end call button, she paused.
What had Penelope said in that message again? That she knew the truth about Sydney’s background.
On the other end, the officer snapped something sharp at Penelope, then said to Sydney, “She’s been asking to see you ever since she arrived. But if you don’t want to see her, that’s fine.”
“I’ll come.” After a brief pause, Sydney added, “What time works?”
“Any time before 5:00 p.m. this afternoon.”
‘5:00 p.m.’ Sydney lowered her gaze to check the time. “Then I’ll come now!”
At the police station, it would be safe. Whatever Penelope had in mind, she would not be able to act on it there.
After she ended the call, Peter spoke before she could. “So we’re not going back to the residence first?”
“Yeah.” Sydney did not hide it. “Take me to the police station. I’m going to see Penelope.”
She was curious. Penelope was already finished. What kind of trouble did she think she could still stir up?
“Got it.” Peter had many strengths, and obedience was one of them. Even so, he asked, “Do you want to let Mr. Sterling know first?”
“I already sent him a message.”
Otherwise, he would have waited for her at home so they could have lunch together.
Peter nodded, then added, “Should we grab food on the way?”
“I’m not hungry.”
Marcus had worried she would go hungry during pregnancy, so he had someone deliver a large box of cut fruit to her office that morning.
She had finished all of it. Right now, she was not hungry at all.

When they arrived at the police station, Sydney told Peter to eat nearby while she went in alone.
The place was full of Diana’s people, so Peter felt comfortable leaving for lunch.
After Sydney explained her purpose, an officer led her in to see Penelope.
Even though she had prepared herself, she still froze for a moment at the sight of her. It had not been long since they last met, but Penelope’s condition was worse than she expected.
Beyond the tangled hair and disheveled appearance, she had grown so thin that her cheeks had hollowed out.
That kind of change did not happen in two or three days at a police station. Which likely meant she had already been reduced to this while living with the Wolfen family.
Penelope lifted her sunken eyes and let out a cold laugh. “Seeing me like this must make you very happy.”
Sydney knew better than to feel any sympathy. “Somewhat. It is satisfying.”
She pulled out the chair opposite Penelope and sat. Ignoring the way Penelope nearly choked on her response, she went straight to the point. “Go on. Whatever you left out in that text, say it now.”
Penelope stared at her calm, composed face. Hatred flickered in her eyes, nearly spilling over. Still, she forced it down and glanced at the officer behind Sydney.
