Cedric's eyes glinted with sarcasm. "Maybe they were toxic besties all along."
If the Merlocks really had orchestrated the crash all those years ago, and he happened to be in that car, then something about it did not add up. However, Cedric was not ready to talk about that yet.
Noelle shifted the subject. "Are you sure no one will trace this back to you? I mean, it is illegal."
"She won't go to the cops."
She asked, "But what if the Merlocks report it anyway?"
Cedric turned his head slightly, his expression calm. "Once she's back, it'll all make sense."
"You sound pretty confident."
"Because everything's already in place," he replied.
He did not want to give her too many details because the last thing he wanted was to shatter her image of him. He had taken care of all the dirty work himself, not just to protect her.
He had done so because he did not want her to have to see—or touch—any of it. That was also why he had left so early this morning to handle everything before she even stepped out the door.
Noelle caught the depth in his dark eyes and instinctively looked away, trying to block out the mess of emotions stirring inside her. They did not say much after that. Before long, the car pulled into an underground garage, where they switched vehicles and drove off again.
Eventually, they stopped outside a tall building. The place looked strangely familiar to Noelle. She suddenly remembered that Emma had brought her here once for a skin care treatment.
Cedric led her through a back entrance behind the spa, winding through a few narrow alleys before entering a room.
Tilly was already waiting inside. The moment she saw Noelle, she jumped to report. "She's inside. The room's all prepped. When do we start?"
Noelle turned to Cedric. "Start what, exactly?"
"Ask her everything you want to know."
Noelle was puzzled. "How? If we're not careful, she might catch on."
Cedric reached for her hand. "That's why we're playing the part of hired hitmen from back then. We kidnapped Mrs. Merlock to demand payment—or we'll expose what really happened."
