His perfectly proportioned, eight-pack abs could easily put all the young, athletic college guys on set to shame.
Realizing her thoughts were drifting into dangerous territory, Claire quickly averted her eyes and wrung out the towel again. Technically, there were four key areas to wipe down to reduce a fever, and one of them was the groin—where the major blood vessels were concentrated.
But that area...
Forget it.
Claire swiftly pulled his shirt back together and tucked the blanket around him. Breathing a heavy sigh of relief, she slipped away quietly.
When she got back into bed this time, she fell asleep almost immediately.
In her hazy slumber, she felt like she was pressed against a furnace. A relentless wave of heat seeped through her thin clothes, scorching her back. It was suffocatingly hot. She instinctively tried to pull away but found herself trapped.
Her dreams were a fragmented mess. One moment, her parents were celebrating her birthday. The next, Jean Rollins had locked her in a dark room. She even dreamed of the baby she was never meant to have.
When she woke up, she was drenched in sweat. She couldn't tell if it was a cold sweat from the nightmares or simply from the intense heat. Groggy, it took her a moment to realize she was being held!
She turned her head and immediately saw the man's sleeping face. He was still flushed and burning up, transferring his body heat directly to her through their clothes. No wonder she had felt so hot all night! She had been cuddled by a man with a raging fever!
Claire tried to shove him away, but his arms were wrapped tightly around her like a steel cage.
"Wilbur! Let me go!" she snapped, growing frantic when she couldn't break free.
Wilbur didn't respond; his breathing was heavy and erratic. As if he had finally caught hold of something comforting, a soft sigh rumbled in his throat. Instead of letting go, he tightened his grip, pulling her even closer against his chest. His burning cheek nuzzled into the crook of her neck as he mumbled incoherently.
"Sweetie, don't leave."
