Wilbur looked as if he had just uncovered the greatest secret in the world; the annoyance in his eyes instantly evaporated.
Hearing him say it out loud sent a jolt of panic straight through Claire's heart.
She immediately jerked her head away, breaking free of his grip.
With forced, instinctive calm, she flatly denied it.
"You're overthinking things."
But Wilbur didn't care. As far as he was concerned, she was jealous.
His gaze locked onto her, turning deeper and far more intense. If one looked closely, there was a palpable surge of raw affection swimming in his eyes.
If she didn't know he was a notorious playboy, she might have actually believed he was deeply devoted to her.
He was probably just riding the high of novelty, treating her like a stray kitten or puppy to be teased for his own amusement.
She had already learned her lesson about what men were really like.
She wasn't going to fall for it again.
As Rowan's second blood-curdling scream echoed through the building, Claire's composure completely returned.
She didn't even look at Rowan. She just stood up and said, "It's getting late. I should go back."
"I'll walk you out," Wilbur offered without trying to make her stay.
Claire paused and asked, "What about Rowan?"
Wilbur smiled. "I'll stay behind and negotiate with her. Friendly terms, of course."
Friendly terms?
Claire had a feeling her concern was entirely misplaced.
If Wilbur dared to do something this extreme, he absolutely had his bases covered.
He personally escorted her back to the hotel.
Claire, having apparently learned her lesson from the car ride earlier, threw the door open and bolted the second the car stopped, not even pausing to say goodbye.
This time, Wilbur didn't get out of the car. He just watched her retreating back and softly said, "Goodnight."
Claire jogged the rest of the way into the hotel.
Wilbur's eyes darkened.
He hadn't managed to coax her properly.
He waited until she disappeared from sight before retracting his gaze and ordering the driver, "Back to the aquatic center."
He was going to have a very thorough, 'friendly negotiation' with Rowan Ross!
Just how friendly?
Making her jump off the thirty-foot platform a full ten times.
