BONUS CHAPTER 3
Five Years Later
“Mummy, where is my daddy?” Isabella asked suddenly, her small hand tightening around mine as she looked up at me with those big eves that always saw too much.
I felt my chest tighten immediately.
“Issy,” Isaac cut in fast, his little voice sharp in that protective way he’d developed too early, “I thought Mommy said you shouldn’t talk about him again.”
“But we need him,” Isabella said, her lower lip pushing out stubbornly as she shook her head. “Everybody has a daddy.”
“We don’t need him,” Isaac snapped back. “Mom is enough for us.
“No!” Isabella yelled, stopping in her tracks so suddenly that I had to stop too. “Then why did you fight with Noah when he said we didn’t have a daddy?”
My heart dropped straight to my stomach.
“Isaac,” I said sharply, turning to him, “you fought?!”
Isaac froze.
“Isaac…” I pressed, lowering my voice.
He looked down at his shoes, kicking at the ground. “He said… he said our dad abandoned us because we were trash.”
The word hit me so hard it felt like a slap.
Trash.
I tried to breathe through it, tried to blink away the tears that rushed up instantly, but my chest burned and my throat closed anyway, the memories crashing in whether I wanted them to or not.
I crouched down in front of them. “Hey. Look at me.”
Isaac lifted his eyes slowly.
“Nobody ever gets to call you that,” I said, my voice shaking despite my effort to stay calm. “Nobody. Do you understand me?”
“He said it loud, Mom,” Isaac whispered. “Everyone heard.”
Isabella moved closer to her brother, her small hand grabbing his shirt. “He made Isaac cry.”
That broke me.
I pulled both of them into my arms, holding them tight, pressing my face into their hair as I struggled to breathe past the pain sitting heavy in my chest.
“You are not trash,” I said, my voice cracking. “You’re my miracles. Both of you. And anyone who says otherwise is wrong.”
Isabella sniffed. “Then why don’t we have a daddy?”
I closed my eyes.
Because five years ago I ran.
Because five years ago one message from Chris had been enough to destroy my world and force me to disappear without a goodbye.
“I had to leave,” I said softly, more to myself than them. “I had to protect you.”
Isaac pulled back slightly. “Did he hurt you, Mom?”
Thesitated
Then nodded.
Isabella’s eyes widened. “Is that why you cry sometimes at night?
My heart twisted painfully.
“I’m okay now,” I said quickly, wiping my face. “I promise.”
They didn’t look convinced.
I stood up slowly, taking both their hands again. “Come on, babies We’re going to be late for school.”
Isaac squeezed my hand. “Mom… I don’t like when people talk about us.”
“I know,” I said gently. “But you don’t fight. You tell a teacher. You hear me?”
Someone was talking, apologizing, saying too many words too fast, but none of it made sense anymore.
Then I heard the person call my name as if they knew me before.
“Sasha…?”
My heart slammed once, hard, even as my body refused to respond
No
No, no, no.
I tried to turn my head but it felt too heavy, like my neck was filled with sand.
Footsteps came closer. Slower now. More careful.
The person crouched beside me.
“Oh my God…” the voice whispered. “Sasha….”
That voice.
I knew it too well.
“No,” I tried to say, my lips barely moving. “It can’t be.”
“Mommy?” Isabella sobbed. “Please answer me.”
“Please sir call an ambulance,” Isaac said urgently. “My mom, she’s bleeding!”
Hands hovered over me, unsure where to touch, afraid to make things worse.
“Sasha,” the voice said again, closer now, breaking, “please don’t do this. Open your eyes. Please. Mm? Please…”
And that was the last thing I heard.
Until… Darkness.
