The soft hum of the engine filled the narrow space like a distant echo from a dream that had not fully released her yet. Naomi stirred slowly beneath the soft blanket covering her body. Her head still felt heavy, her throat dry, and every breath felt like waking after a long illness. It took several seconds before she realized the surface beneath her was far too comfortable to belong to any hotel bed.

Her eyes opened slowly.

A whitesilver sky stretched beyond the oval window beside the long seat where she lay. Daylight slipped gently into the luxurious cabin dressed in cream tones and dark wood. Everything was quiet, polished, and unfamiliar.

Naomi frowned. Where am I?

She tried to sit up, but her body protested immediately. Dizziness struck so fast that she dropped her head back again.

That was when Lydia’s voice drifted from the front of the cabin.

Yes, yes, I know you’re panicking.

Naomi turned her head carefully. Lydia was seated across from her, holding a phone, one leg folded casually beneath her. Her face looked calm and relaxed as she responded to whoever was on the call.

I am not panicking, came a woman’s voice through the speaker, clear and slightly sharp. I just want to know why you came back early. And why you didn’t return to SunCity. Honestly! You know Mom is worried sick. Especially after Andrew said you left in such a rush. And you told me there was nothing to worry about?

Lydia laughed again. So after becoming a mother of three, you’ve turned incredibly talkative, Althea.

Just give me one reasonable explanation, Lydia. If you don’t, don’t blame us for coming after you wherever you are.

Ugh.Lydia giggled. Terrifying.

Then she sighed dramatically. Truly, there’s nothing for you to worry about, my dearest sisterinlaw.

Answer my question. On the other end, Althea clicked her tongue in annoyance.

Nothing happened.

If nothing happened, Cale would never change his schedule,Althea shot back impatiently.

Naomi watched Lydia in silence.

That name she recognized.

Althea.

Lydia had mentioned it several times before, always warmly, as if speaking of someone important. And nowthe woman was

her sisterinlaw.

No wonder they sounded so close.

Lydia glanced over and noticed Naomi was awake. She lifted one finger, signaling for the girl to stay quiet.

There was a small matter,Lydia said casually. And send my love to Mommy. Oh, and Grace and Josh too.

You’ve only been gone a week.

Exactly. Isn’t that a very long time?Lydia asked mischievously.

The voice on the other end let out a long sigh. Lydia.

All right. Everything is safe, truly. I can promise you that. There’s nothing you need to worry about.

Then why do I still feel worried?

Since before you woke up.

Naomi frowned in irritation. Explain what all of this means, Mr. Miller.

What exactly do I need to explain?

Only when Naomi’s tone made it clear she was upset did Cale finally lift his gaze from the tablet that had claimed nearly all of

his attention.

Naomi stared at him in disbelief. You had no right to do this.

Cale set the tablet aside. You’re right.

Naomi fell silent for a fraction of a second, clearly not expecting him to say it so calmly, almost as if he agreed.

Then why did you do it?

Because in Berlin, someone was on the way to the place where you were lying unconscious.

The words silenced her instantly. She could only swallow.

Falcon?she whispered.

Yes.

Her face paled all over again.

Lydia sat down beside her. But you’re safe now.

Safe?Naomi let out a short, bitter laugh. I’m on a stranger’s plane, headed who knows where.

We are not strangers,Lydia said.

You’ve only known me for a few days.

Lydia ended up laughing. And?

Naomi turned back to Cale, largely ignoring Lydia now. She needed to speak to the person clearly responsible for all of this.

I want to go back.

No,Cale answered immediately.

You didn’t even ask what I wanted.

I know what you wanted. His tone was flat, but firm. You wanted to run from everyone, including Don Falcon. And pretend you could solve everything alone. That did not work.

This is my life.

And your life is being hunted,Cale shot back, his voice sharper now than it had been before.

Naomi gripped the blanket tightly. Her body was still weak, but anger rose hot enough to warm her cheeks.

You don’t get to make decisions for my life.

Cale rose from his seat and walked toward her. He stopped directly in front of Naomi, close enough for her to notice the faint shadows of exhaustion beneath his eyes.
