Chapter 535
“This can’t be happening,” she muttered.
Without realizing it, she began pacing back and forth across the living room. She should have been enjoying her time there savoring the space she had imagined as her own. But the pleasant vision had been wiped away the moment the news began exposing one name after another-Bret Frederick, Oscar as his accomplice, and the growing list of people connected to the scheme against Callister Group.
The broadcast continued.
She listened to part of it. The rest, her mind had already moved on-calculating, measuring, deciding what she needed to do next.
Selena stood in the middle of the room; her phone still clutched in her hand. Her breathing hadn’t fully steadied yet, but she forced herself to think clearly.
No.
She couldn’t panic.
Harold wasn’t someone who fell easily. He always had a backup plan. For years, he had survived one crisis after another. Raising Eli alone hadn’t been easy, but he had always had a clear purpose-and she had endured for that purpose too. Even when Harold had been dragged into trouble before, she had held her ground.
Everything couldn’t possibly collapse because of one confession.
Selena looked back at the television.
The coverage was still looping. And the name being repeated over and over was only one:
Bret Frederick.
No one had mentioned Harold.
Instead, the reporters were beginning to question the prosecution staff-how their reported losses could differ so drastically from the data provided by Daven’s team.
There was no news of the mastermind behind the entire operation being arrested. And slowly, the tightness in Selena’s chest eased. She didn’t need to be this tense. Not yet.
Even if the others talked, it didn’t mean anyone could trace the trail back to Harold. She was certain of that.
“As long as there’s no news about Harold being arrested,” she murmured, “it means he can still move. He’s probably stabilizing the situation.”
She still had time.
Still had a chance to secure her place in this house.
Taking a deep breath, Selena turned off the television. The room fell silent again. This time, she tried to steady her thoughts, to regain control.
That was when she heard soft footsteps coming from the corridor.

Selena turned quickly, assuming the rest of the household had begun returning. But it was Eli, standing hesitantly at the doorway.
The girl looked uncertain. Her eyes immediately caught the tension that hadn’t completely left her mother’s face.
“Mom?” Eli called softly. “Did something happen?”
Selena froze for a brief second.
Then, almost by instinct, her expression changed. A faint smile appeared-the same familiar smile Eli had seen
countless times.
“What is it? Why did you come downstairs?” Selena asked lightly, as if nothing were wrong.
Eli stepped closer, her gaze still fixed on her mother, puzzled.
“I was… getting a little bored in my room. Gia said she wanted to show me the back garden, but she had to grab something first. Then I saw you here.” She hesitated. “Why do you look so tense, Mom?”
“Me?” Selena let out a small laugh. “Do I really look tense?”
Although Eli didn’t look fully convinced, she chose to sit down on the sofa.
“Can I watch TV?” she asked carefully. “Gia said there’s news about Mr. Daven.”
Selena gave a short nod. “His case is still all over the media.”
Eli glanced at the dark television screen. “Is he still being held?”
Selena didn’t answer right away.
Eli stepped closer, picked up the remote, and turned the TV back on. The news broadcast appeared instantly.
A few seconds later, her expression brightened with visible relief.
