Meanwhile, Eli walked with her head half lowered, her hands twisting together to steady her nerves. Tears shimmered at the corners of her eyes, barely held back. She couldn’t understand how a morning that was supposed to pass quietly had ended in something so bitter and unsettling.

Unlike Eli, who was drowning in guilt, Selena complained nonstop as they walked toward the bedroom wing. She cursed under her breath, again, every insult aimed at Althea.

“That shameless woman dared to treat me like that! As if she were above me,” Selena snapped. “Our status here is the same. We both have children by Chase Miller!”

She stamped her foot, her face flushed red with restrained fury.

“No. I won’t accept this. I refuse to be treated like this,” Selena said sharply, coming to an abrupt stop. “I have to get back at her.”

Eli, who was following behind, froze in surprise. “Mom?”

Her shock deepened when Selena suddenly turned around, clearly not finished stirring up trouble this morning.

“Mom, stop!” Eli said quickly, stepping forward. She couldn’t let her mother storm back like this.

“What are you doing?!” Selena snapped, glaring when Eli grabbed her arm. “Let go of me! Or have you decided to ‘take her side now?”

“It’s not like that, Mom.” Eli struggled to keep her voice calm, aware of how their voices echoed along the corridor. She didn’t want to draw any more attention. “Can we just go back to the room? Let’s talk inside, okay?”

Selena stared at her for a long moment. Finally, she gave in. She yanked her arm free from Eli’s grasp and strode off, leaving Eli no choice but to follow.

The moment they reached the hallway leading to their rooms, Selena swung open Eli’s door and grabbed her daughter’s hand roughly, dragging her inside.

Eli cried out in pain, but Selena ignored it and slammed the door shut behind them with a loud bang, not caring if the sound drew unwanted attention.

“What do you think you were doing back there?” Selena’s voice dropped low, trembling with suppressed rage. Do you realize what you did, in front of all of them?”

Eli winced, rubbing her hand where her mother’s grip had left it reddened and sore.

“Not going to answer me?” Selena barked.

The shout made Eli shrink back instinctively. But her mother wasn’t going to stop until she got a response. Slowly, Eli lifted her face. Her eyes were wet, but the fear in them had shifted-no longer absolutely.

“I was trying to stop the chaos, Mom,” she said quietly.

((

“Stop it?” Selena let out a short, humorless laugh. The idea was ridiculous to her. “You embarrassed me. In front of Nathan-and especially in front of that damned woman!”

Eli swallowed hard. Her fingers twisted together until her palms grew damp with sweat. “I never embarrassed you, Mom,” she said softly. “You embarrassed yourself. With the way you spoke. With how you hurt them the moment you walked into the dining room.”

“Are you blaming me?” Selena stepped closer, her voice sharp. “After everything I’ve done for you?”

“I’m grateful, I really am. But I never asked you to do it this way, Mom,” Eli replied, her voice beginning to tremble. “I never asked you to shout, to accuse people, or to almost slap someone.”

“Watch your mouth,” Selena cut in coldly.

Eli shook her head as tears finally spilled over. “Isn’t this what you wanted? To get into the Miller family’s house. You’ve achieved that. So why are you acting like this? Why are you making everyone hate you?” Her voice cracked. “No- not just you. They’re going to hate me too. I’ll be hated by all of them.”

“You are not hated,” Selena snapped. “You’re being seen. You’re being noticed. That’s what matters.”

“No,” Eli’s voice broke apart. “I can’t be seen like that. And I don’t want to be noticed the way you want, Mom. Instead, I’m already being seen as a problem. As an excuse. As a tool.”

The slap came fast-so fast that even Selena seemed shocked that her hand had moved on its own.

Smack.

The sound rang sharply through the room. Selena’s palm throbbed, turning red, while Eli’s head snapped to the side. If she hadn’t grabbed the edge of the table, she would have collapsed. Her cheek burned, her ears rang.

Eli didn’t cry right away. Her body froze, as if her mind refused to accept what had just happened.

“Don’t you dare talk back to me again,” Selena said coldly, indifferent to the pain shooting through her own hand. Eli deserved it. She needed a harsh warning from now on. Selena would not allow Eli to act on her own will.

“I am your mother.”

Eli squeezed her eyes shut, unknowingly biting hard on her lower lip. Tears streamed freely. “And I am your child,” she whispered through her sobs. “Not your weapon.”

Those words made Selena’s face flush with fury. Her breathing grew erratic, her hands clenched tightly. “Go to your room,” she ordered. She needed Eli out of her sight before her rage exploded further. “I don’t want to see you right now.”

Eli didn’t answer. She turned and walked quickly into her room. The door closed softly behind her. Once inside, she shut it and locked it, then leaned her back against the door as her body slowly slid down to the floor. Her sobs broke free, silent but violent, her shoulders shaking as she buried her face between her knees.

Selena, meanwhile, ran her hands through her hair again, her fingers trembling as she struggled to contain the storm raging inside her. She paced the room like a caged animal, breath heavy, chest rising and falling too fast, as if the air itself was too tight to hold her anger.

Her eyes swept across every corner of the room-the neatly made bed, the perfectly draped curtains, the warm morning light spilling in. Everything looked calm, peaceful… and to her, unbearably mocking. Too cruelly different from the chaos in her head.
