Chapter 489

“You should see this,” Lydia said as she turned on the flat-screen TV in the family room. Riana and Nathan looked startled by

her words.

“What’s going on?” one of them asked.

Lydia let out a long breath. “Before that, I’ve already asked Josh and Grace to stay in the right-wing pavilion. Their private tutor has arrived, and I’ve instructed the staff to monitor their phone use and any local TV channels.”

“Why?” Riana asked, her curiosity sharpening.

Lydia finally turned on the television in the Miller family living room. The news of Eli and Selena’s appearance was a headline no channel could afford to ignore.

Including the one Lydia happened to select.

“Eli is the biological child of Chase Miller.”

Riana shot to her feet. Her body froze in front of the screen. The hand that had been holding her favorite cup of lemon tea began to tremble, nearly letting it slip from her grasp-luckily, Lydia was quick enough to catch it.

Nathan, meanwhile, stood stunned. He couldn’t find a single word to say, his eyes fixed on the broadcast, listening to every detail-especially to the woman named Selena, wearing a sorrowful expression, presenting herself as wronged and oppressed.

“I didn’t know how to tell you,” Lydia said quietly. “I’m just as shocked as you are.”

“Where did you even get-” Nathan began.

His words were cut off by Riana’s voice.

“What is she doing?!” Riana’s voice shook. The shock in her eyes had been replaced by a surge of emotion. “How could she do this?” She turned sharply to her husband, irritation blazing in her gaze. “That insane woman is really testing my patience,

Nathan.”

Nathan could only sigh deeply. His face tightened. Like Riana, he hadn’t anticipated Selena’s move. They hadn’t met since their last encounter, but Selena’s actions had been monitored closely. How had this slipped past them?

He had weathered countless storms in business and politics throughout his life-but this one, aimed directly at their family,

struck in the cruelest way possible.

“What should we do?” Riana asked impatiently.

“You’d better calm yourself first, Mom,” Lydia interjected gently. She remained at Riana’s side, wrapping an arm around her shoulders and guiding her back toward the sofa.

“How can I calm down?” Riana snapped, though she didn’t resist Lydia’s touch. “There isn’t even anything truly verified yet, is there? This is exactly why I kept pushing Daven to—”

“Darling,” Nathan cut in, taking her hand. The gesture made Rian turn to look at him. “Didn’t we agree that if Daven was keeping something from us, he must have had a reason?”

Those words made Riana draw a long breath and release it slowly, forcing herself to calm down. Little by little, she pushed aside the anger sparked by the news still playing on the screen. “Yes. I know.”

“I’m sure Daven had his reasons for not telling us right away,” Nahan continued. “Not just you—even Althea, his own wife, doesn’t know the actual truth behind that DNA test.”

“And now, because of this news, everyone believes that girl is Chae’s child,” Riana said quietly.

Nathan couldn’t deny what had unfolded that afternoon. It was shocking-enough to cloud clear judgment. For a moment, he even questioned what Daven’s real plan was, especially with the man still stuck at the prosecutor’s office, undergoing further questioning.

“You’re right,” Nathan finally said, his voice low but sharp. “Especially when she said it during an official press conference. With documents that would spread instantly, all aimed at cornering Chase’s name. And it was broadcast live.”

Riana squeezed her eyes shut. Her hand clenched unconsciously, her nails digging into her palm. “How could she do this? In public, in front of all those reporters and media outlets? Dragging hase’s name through the mud like this?”

“You’re right. None of this adds up,” Nathan replied. “How could she gain access to something like this without help from someone else?”

Before Riana could respond, a phone rang, cutting through the tension.

Nathan immediately grabbed his phone. His hand moved fast. “Yes, Erick?”

Elsewhere, at the same moment.

Cale slammed his car door shut the instant the broadcast appeared on his phone screen. He had just stepped out of an abandoned warehouse near the harbor-another location he suspected might be one of Harold’s hideouts. And once again, there was no trace of him.

“Damn it!” he cursed loudly.

Chris, standing beside him, stared at the screen as well. “She really went live. With that many reporters, it’s easy to steer public opinion and corner someone. And she did it in a public building, no less. Incredible.”
