“Captain, you can’t judge us too,” Fred protested. “You often ask for our notes after practice too.”

“That’s because you guys take more complete notes.”

Laughter broke out again. Their conversation then shifted from college assignments to practice, the schedule for the next game, and even the professor most feared on campus. Eli enjoyed every conversation from where she sat.

She did not have to make any effort to follow their conversation because everything flowed so naturally. Every now and then, she laughed when Kaelen and Rick blamed each other, or when Johan and Fred added more stories about their college lives.

She had not experienced a night like this in a long time.

There were no arguments, no accusations, and no one forcing her to explain anything. She only needed to sit, laugh, and enjoy the company that felt so sincere.
