The hospital.
Emmy shot up in bed, heart pounding, dragged out of a nightmare.
She must have spent too long before bed trying to remember what she’d forgotten, because her dreams took her right back to her past life. Back to the night of the Sullivan family fire.
It happened in the dead of night. The flames swallowed Abriella’s parents first, then left their beautiful home nothing but a blackened skeleton. When Emmy arrived, all she saw was Abriella, kneeling outside the rubble, crying like the world had ended.
Emmy stared up at the ceiling, gasping for air, that same terrible worry squeezing her chest.
“Abriella!” she called out before she even realized it.
Lorraine, who had been watching over her, hurried to her side. She helped Emmy sit up, her hands gentle, and offered a glass of warm water.
“Did you have a bad dream, ma’am?”
Emmy didn’t even look at the water. “Where’s Abriella? Is she here?”
Lorraine answered softly, “Ms. Sullivan left with her husband about two hours ago.”
Emmy glanced out the window at the thick night. “What time is it?”
“It’s already ten, ma’am.”
Ten o’clock…
That was the time the fire started, in her last life.
She scrambled for her phone.
Lorraine, quick as ever, placed it in her hand.
Emmy forced herself to calm down, then dialed Abriella’s number.
“Emmy? You’re awake?” Abriella’s voice was light and cheerful on the other end.
“Abriella, where are you right now?”
“I just got home with Will. What’s up?”
“Something’s wrong. I think your parents are in danger. You need to get over there, right now!”
…
Meanwhile.
Abriella had just kicked off her heels at the door when her phone rang. She froze as she listened. When she hung up, she turned to Will, who was slipping on his house shoes.
“Don’t change your shoes.”
