James didn’t even look up. “I’m not that free.”
“Oh?” Tyler’s eyes sparkled with mischief. “That’s funny.”
He stretched out his words, “Right before New Year’s, to get Dad to go to the countryside for that charity project, I let something slip.”
“I told him his daughter-in-law was pregnant.”
James’s hand froze above the paperwork. For a second, the whole room seemed to pause.
He finally looked up, and his eyes were icy cold as they locked on Tyler.
Tyler held up his hands like he was surrendering. “Hey, don’t look at me like that. You know Dad. Unless there’s something big in it for him, he’d never actually stay put in the countryside.”
“He only agreed to go after I dropped that news. Doesn’t that just prove he’s actually looking forward to your kid being born?”
James frowned, silent, but the tension in the room was getting heavier by the second.
Tyler pretended not to notice and kept talking. “I think Dad’s first impression of her was pretty good. So, when are you going to tell him she’s actually your wife?”
When James didn’t answer, Tyler changed tactics.
“And when are you going to tell her who you really are?”
That question hit James right where it hurt. His lips pressed into a thin line, and a cloud of worry darkened his eyes.
After a long pause, he finally spoke, voice low and serious. “I’m planning to introduce Dad to my mother-in-law soon.”
Tyler’s jaw dropped. “Seriously? You’re just going for it? Aren’t you worried you’ll freak her mom out?”
James clamped his mouth shut, saying nothing more.
But he knew he couldn’t keep hiding forever. His mother-in-law had already asked twice to meet his family. If he kept delaying, she’d start thinking less of him.
Seeing how serious James was, Tyler finally stopped joking around.
“Well, she’s pregnant, and honestly, that baby’s her best protection right now. You really should tell her the truth about who you are, or else… how are you going to get Grandma’s shares transferred to her and the baby without it being a mess?”
Talking about Grandma made Tyler’s expression fall. “Grandma’s not doing well. I’m worried…”
“When’s he coming back?” James cut him off, his tone ice cold.
Tyler let out a helpless sigh. “Both families are about to meet, and you still won’t call him ‘Dad’?”
“Just stay out of it.”
