Dean gave her hand a gentle squeeze, his voice soft. “You did this yourself. When Dr. Pepper officially announces she’s taking you on as her apprentice, I’ll throw you a huge party. I’ll even bring your mom back from overseas for it.”

Emmy hurried over. “Excuse me, can I go in now?”

Dean followed, his tone mocking. “See? Dr. Pepper doesn’t even want to see you.”

He even tried to grab her hand. “Come on, let’s get lunch together.”
