Having her true intentions exposed so publicly, a flash of embarrassment crossed Ella's face. She anxiously tried to defend herself. "No! You misunderstand me! I just want your wife to have a respectable status that matches yours!"
Pointing a trembling finger at Sylvia in the hospital bed, Ella's eyes filled with aristocratic disdain for the class divide. "Yes, Sylvia has made a small name for herself with this agricultural project of hers. But at the end of the day, it is a government subsidized initiative dealing with farming! She works with blue collar laborers! In our top tier social circles, an industry like that is completely unpresentable! If she wants to marry into the Michell family, she must have a flawless, high class background. Otherwise, bringing such a ruined family history into our home will make us the laughingstock of the entire Capital!"
Steve stared silently at his haughty mother. Leaning back into his wheelchair, his expression grew impossibly cold. "Is that so? Since the threshold to enter the Michell family is so high, then she simply will not marry into it."
Ella froze in place, seemingly unable to comprehend his words.
Remaining slouched in his chair, his eyes devoid of any warmth, Steve continued. "As of today, I am officially severing all ties with the Michell family. Who I, Steve, choose to marry is my own freedom. You have no right to interfere, and you will not have a hand in it."
Ella's eyes widened in sheer disbelief, staring at her own son as if he were a stranger.
Steve turned his head slightly and issued an order to his assistant. "Go draft a statement officially severing my relationship with the Michell family."
The assistant bowed respectfully. "Yes, sir. Right away."
Now, Ella was truly terrified. She never imagined her son would actually follow through with such a threat. Frantically grabbing his arm, her voice broke into a panicked screech. "Steve! I was wrong! I take back everything I said! I promise I will never interfere with your lives again!"
