Since James had gotten a vasectomy, Emmy was desperately hoping she was pregnant. She wanted to bring another child into the world that shared both her and James's bloodline. Given his surgery, this would be their final chance. She never imagined James would be so violently opposed to the idea. Not only was he unexcited, but he actively wanted to end the life growing inside her. His callous attitude felt like a blade twisting in her heart.
After Emmy left, James leaned back against the headboard, his brow furrowed in intense frustration. He could not understand why she insisted on having a third child when they already had a son and a daughter. Having another baby meant Emmy would have to suffer for ten months and walk through the gates of hell in the delivery room all over again. He had no shortage of heirs and no desire for a massive family. All he wanted was for her to be safe. He assumed Emmy would share his mindset, considering how deeply devoted she was to her career. Pregnancy would inevitably derail her projects. Why was her reaction so extreme? Why would she rather fight with him than walk away from this accident?
James sat in bed for a long time before finally getting up. He walked to the door of the children's room, intending to talk to Emmy again, but when he turned the handle, he found it locked from the inside. He stood there for a moment, raised his hand to knock, but ultimately let it drop. Agitated, he turned and went to the study. The light inside remained on for the entire night.
Early the next morning, the door to the children's room opened. Emmy walked out with slightly swollen eyes. As soon as she stepped into the hallway, the study door opened as well. James looked exhausted and ruggedly handsome after a sleepless night. Seeing her, he immediately strode over.
Their eyes met. Emmy pressed her lips together and prepared to walk past him to go downstairs, but James blocked her path. Staring at her red eyes, he felt a sharp ache in his chest.
He took a deep breath, looking as though he had just made a terribly difficult compromise. "I thought about it all night, and I will respect your wishes. However, I have a condition."
Emmy frowned. "What condition?"
James looked at her with complex emotions swirling in his dark eyes. "If the checkup reveals it is a girl, we will keep her. But if it is a boy..."
He trailed off, staring into Emmy's eyes without finishing his sentence.
