James did not answer. He closed his eyes, and it took several seconds for his breathing to steady. He finally turned his head to look at her.
"If you are pregnant, we are getting rid of it."
Emmy froze. The hopeful smile on her lips vanished instantly. She stared at the man before her in utter disbelief. "What did you just say?" she asked, her brows knitting together. "Why would we get rid of it?"
James looked back at her with a chillingly cruel sense of rationality.
"Because the timing is completely wrong. Emmy, we already have two children. Joey and Dolly are still so young and require a lot of our energy. You have your studies and your research projects. There is absolutely no reason for you to endure the pressure and pain of having another child."
He squeezed her hand tightly. "I do not want to see you suffer again. When you gave birth to the twins, Lorraine told me you were in agonizing pain on the delivery bed and eventually passed out from sheer exhaustion. I refuse to let you go through that a second time."
James paused, his tone growing even more rigid. "Besides, I have already spoken to Dr. Hall. The moment you go to the hospital and confirm the pregnancy, she will immediately schedule the most painless abortion procedure available. The sooner it is done, the less it will harm your body."
Emmy's fingers slowly turned ice cold. She gently pulled her hand out of his firm grip. In that moment, she realized that James had always possessed a ruthless indifference deep in his bones. No matter how much he loved and spoiled her, the dictatorial nature of a man in power and the cold decisiveness of a military operator had never truly left him.
Emmy looked at him, her eyes turning red. "This is your child. Do you not feel even a shred of excitement?"
James frowned deeper. "What is there to be excited about? It will only bring you pain. An early embryo is nothing more than a cluster of cells. The faster you get rid of it, the faster you will recover."
Emmy sat up abruptly as tears spilled down her cheeks. "If I am really pregnant, I will never abort it!"
James scrambled to sit up and hugged her from behind. "Emmy, I am sorry. I was too impulsive that night. But I really do not want another child. Let's just talk about this calmly, okay? Please do not be mad."
Emmy forcefully pried his fingers off her waist. She turned around, glaring at him with red, tear filled eyes that shone with pure disappointment.
"You call this talking? You never even bothered to ask for my opinion before you booked an abortion with Dr. Hall. From the very beginning, you decided you were going to kill this baby. This is an order, James, not a discussion. If your only goal is to get rid of it, then we have nothing left to talk about."
She shoved him away and walked toward the door. "I am sleeping with the kids."
She paused at the doorway but did not look back. "You should really think about this. Because of your vasectomy, this might be the very last child we ever have."
