Abis spun around fast.
There on the waves, Penny had surfaced. Blood was spreading through the water around her stomach, turning it a dark red. Her face looked like all the color had drained out, but her eyes were locked on him, refusing to let go. In her hand, she still gripped her stained knife.
A flicker of anger flashed in Abis's eyes.
Useless. Four of them and they couldn't even finish off one bodyguard.
But he didn't have time to dwell on that. Emmy was all that mattered.
He hoisted Emmy up, pushing her onto the deck of the yacht before yelling at the men already waiting on board, “What are you standing there for? Stop her. Don’t let her get up here.”
A few bodyguards, disguised as crew members, immediately jumped into the water, swimming hard toward the injured Penny.
The surface exploded into chaos all over again.
On the deck, Abis dropped to his knees, crossing his hands and pressing down on Emmy’s chest, starting CPR.
“Emmy! Come on, wake up!”
“I’m not letting you die, do you hear me?”
Once... twice... three times... He pressed with everything he had.
Suddenly, Emmy’s body jerked. She coughed up a mouthful of salty seawater and broke into a fit of ragged coughing, her chest rising and falling as she gasped for breath.
“Emmy!”
Abis nearly sobbed with relief, pulling her upright and into his arms. His voice broke, thick with emotion. “Thank God. Thank God you’re alright... Don’t be scared. It’s me. I’ve got you. You’re safe now, I promise.”
He spoke softly, his arms tightening as if he could pull her right into his heart.
But Emmy didn't respond.
Her eyes were open, but the light in them was gone. She stared straight ahead at nothing, empty and lost, her soul miles away.
Abis kept calling her name, hands shaking her shoulders, desperate.
