Penny was just above her, fighting desperately, surrounded by four divers in black wetsuits. They were armed with daggers, each move meant to kill. There was no way they were just regular divers. These were professionals—hitmen.
Emmy’s heart pounded. She was ready to swim up and help Penny, but suddenly something yanked hard around her left ankle. A surge of force pulled her down, stopping her in place. Panic shot through her as she glanced down and saw the “tourist” who had passed by earlier. He’d circled back without her noticing. Now he was gripping a thick nylon rope, the other end looped tightly around her ankle.
He didn’t even hesitate. Using the rope, he dragged her deeper, like she was nothing but a caught animal. Emmy’s mouth opened and a stream of bubbles slipped free. That was the last bit of oxygen left in her lungs.
Pure terror took over. Emmy flailed and kicked, bent double, trying to reach her ankle and untie the rope. The knot was locked tight, impossible to loosen, and the more she fought it, the more it bit into her skin, squeezing down to the bone.
She could feel the water pressing in from all sides, the pressure building. Her chest burned, her lungs started to spasm. It was like a thousand cold hands closing around her throat.
She worked desperately at the knot, but every second that passed, it felt more hopeless. She looked up, searching for Penny, hoping for a lifeline. What she saw broke her inside.
One of Penny’s attackers caught her off guard while she glanced Emmy’s way. In a blink, he lunged. The dagger drove straight into Penny’s stomach. In an instant, bright red blood exploded into the blue sea.
Penny doubled up in pain, somehow still trying to reach Emmy through it all.
“No…”
Emmy felt her vision shake. Her heart caved in, as if crushed by some unseen force. The grief and horror were so much she gasped, losing the last air in her lungs. Water rushed in, flooding her mouth and nose.
Everything tasted salty, cold, deadly. She coughed and choked, pressure spiking in her chest. Her lungs screamed. Her mind started to blur. The world melted into a twisted, dizzy mess.
Everything hurt. It felt like her skull was splitting in two. Her brain fizzed with hallucinations, panic and darkness spinning around her.
She couldn’t see. She couldn’t move. She was sinking, heavy and numb, deeper and deeper into cold, endless black.
