The moment those words slipped out, Krystina, who’d just been acting like the perfect CEO, turned beet red. She knew exactly what Emmy meant. The office rumors must have finally reached her little sister. Krystina started waving her hands, her words spilling out so fast they almost tripped over each other.

“Emmy, you’ve got it all wrong. Danny and I... We’re just colleagues. At most, we’re sort of, like, half-friends. There is absolutely nothing going on between us, nothing inappropriate. Please, don’t listen to all that talk.”

Emmy just tilted her head, her eyes sliding over to Danny, who hadn’t said a thing the whole time.

“Oh? Is that true?”

Danny had been sitting there, quiet and tense, but inside he’d been holding back for months. Ever since that team-building trip to Fiji, Krystina had basically turned into someone else. He had no idea if she’d found out something or if she was just overthinking it, but she started avoiding him like crazy.

Back at the office, his desk used to be just outside the CEO’s office, only a wall separating them. Sometimes he could even catch a glimpse of her through the blinds if he looked up from his computer. But the morning after they got back from Fiji, Krystina ordered his desk to be moved. Not just to another spot, but all the way to the admin department in the next building. It was clear she wanted distance.

Since then, the only time they saw each other was during meetings. The rest of the time, he couldn’t even get close to her office. Even for work reports, Krystina insisted on using the phone or sending emails. If it hadn’t been for Mr. Lincoln finalizing the Sync2.0 project, which meant a bunch of urgent strategy meetings that couldn’t be done over the phone, Krystina would never have brought him to Boston in the first place.

And even then, she went out of her way to keep her distance. On the flight over, she bought him a business class ticket and put herself in economy, just so they wouldn’t have to sit together. Ten hours in the air and not a single word between them.

Now, hearing Krystina scrambling to make it sound like they were barely even friends, Danny couldn’t hold it in anymore. He let out a cold laugh and set his coffee cup down hard on the table.

“Yeah, Emmy, Krystina’s totally right. We’re just coworkers. Honestly, I doubt we even count as friends at this point.”

He shot her a look, all his frustration pouring out in a sarcastic rant.

“I don’t know what’s gotten into Krystina lately, but she’s been making work pretty impossible for me. She moved my desk to some forgotten corner in another building, so now I’ve got to walk an extra twenty minutes every day. Even normal work stuff has to be handled over the phone, like we’re in some kind of spy movie.”
