Dumped My Cheating Ex. Now I'm Sleeping Next to a Billionaire CEO novel Chapter 1099

As soon as she heard the word “husband,” Emmy’s fuzzy mind snapped a little clearer.

What was James doing right now? The thought brought a wave of longing and a sharp ache she couldn’t quite put into words.

“Mmm…” she mumbled, not really wanting to talk.

John caught her chill reaction, how she didn’t even want to mention James, and that just confirmed it for him. Their relationship really was on the rocks. If that guy didn’t know how to appreciate her, well, he couldn’t blame himself for making a move. He was going to go for it.

A few minutes later, the car pulled up outside Emmy’s dorm.

Emmy unbuckled her seatbelt, opened the door, and as soon as her foot hit the ground, her knees nearly gave out.

“Careful!”

John was around the car in a flash, steadying her by the arm.

For a second, they were suddenly way too close. John froze, then drew back, trying to keep it polite.

Just then, a woman’s voice called out from across the parking lot, sharp and commanding.

“Emmy!”

She turned automatically. Her mom was striding toward her.

Teresa wore a cashmere coat, a little travel-worn but still so elegant it was impossible to look away.

“Mom!”

Half the alcohol in Emmy’s system seemed to evaporate. She broke into a huge, delighted grin.

Teresa reached her in a few quick steps and pulled Emmy in close. The moment she caught a whiff of alcohol, her expression darkened.

“How much did you drink? You’re a young woman alone in another country, you have to be careful. What if something happened?”

Emmy leaned on her mom, suddenly feeling about five years old and caught doing something wrong.

“I’m sorry, I didn’t mean to, I just had a couple extra drinks today. Penny was with me though, nothing could’ve happened.”

Just to blend in at the lab or at class, Penny always kept her distance unless there was real trouble. She was like Emmy’s invisible bodyguard, only stepping in if things went south.

Teresa shot her a look, then turned her attention to John, who was standing awkwardly off to the side.

“Thank you for bringing my daughter home,” she said, all polite composure.

John looked at her, surprised. She couldn’t have been more than thirty, with flawless skin and an air that turned heads.
