Emmy’s eyes sparkled with surprise. Next to her, Penny straightened up even more, as if instinctively reacting to someone who held all the power in the room. The air in the pavilion went cold. Tyler’s eyebrows pinched together. He hadn’t expected James to show up so fast, not when he was supposed to be stuck in a meeting. He’d been so close. Maybe just ten more minutes and he could have broken through Emmy’s walls. Too late. Tyler forced the shadows from his gaze and looked at the man standing there, cold and commanding.

“James, we’re family. Do you really have to push it this far?” Tyler’s voice was heavy, like a brother nursing a heartbreak he couldn’t quite hide. “I’ve always treated you well. Must you keep opposing me like this, giving outsiders a reason to laugh at us?”

James shifted, pulling Emmy partly behind him, shielding her automatically. He looked down at Tyler, his eyes full of scorn. “You know better than anyone how sincere you’ve really been with me.” He didn’t wait for a reply. He just grabbed Emmy’s hand and started to walk away.

Tyler’s fists clenched on his knees. Watching James and Emmy about to leave, he gritted his teeth and called out, his voice cutting through the silence. “Is this all because of our brother’s death?”

James stopped in his tracks. His whole body went tense, his tall frame suddenly rigid. The wind seemed to stop. Only the soft sound of the lake against the shore remained. Tyler pushed himself up from the stone table, voice shaking, full of grievance.

“You’re really going to blame it all on me, aren’t you? But what did his death have to do with me?” Tyler’s voice rose, raw and desperate. “My legs had just been ruined. I was already a mess, barely able to protect myself! How is it fair to dump all of that on me?”

Emmy could feel James beside her, every muscle wound tight with fury. The anger radiated from him, impossible to hide.

Now that everything was out in the open, James wanted answers. He turned around, his eyes dark and red-rimmed, pain and violence swirling behind them.
