Fawn nodded.
Vespera continued, "That's all I can help you with. I came here with my friends, so I'll join them now. You should… be careful."
With that, Vespera let go of Fawn's hand, but Fawn quickly grabbed hers. "Miss, please don't go! I'm terrified."
Vespera was speechless. Did Fawn think she wasn't scared at all?
"I'm sure Mrs. Dawson will seek you out soon. I already ruined her plan earlier. If I continue hanging around you, I'll be in danger as well."
"I'm sorry for dragging you into this." Fawn released Vespera's hand and became more composed. "Go and look for your friends. I'll be fine."
"Don't be nervous. Remain calm and act normal." After saying that, Vespera took a plate of snacks with her and walked away. She wasn't as chivalrous as Rebecca. That was more than what anyone could expect of Vespera.
Meanwhile, Fawn tightened her grip on her plate to calm herself down for a few seconds. Then, she joined a group of older women seated together, all engrossed in conversation. She chatted with them for a while before attempting to text someone.
In a corner of the banquet hall, a woman dressed in a gray evening gown was staring at Fawn. She calmly made a call. "Something's not right. I think she knows something."
Meanwhile, Vespera brought a plate of snacks back to Rebecca and Yasmine. While scooping up some cake with her spoon, Vespera began telling them what had happened.
Rebecca and Yasmine went silent for a moment before the former asked, "If we're going to save someone, shouldn't we go all the way? Don't we have Calvert on our side? Ask him to come in and escort that woman back home."
Yasmine sighed. "And then? If Mrs. Dawson knows that we're aware of her true colors, do you think we could get away with it even if all of us make our escape tonight?
"Vera did the right thing. All of the women here are either wealthy or well-connected. If that woman has become Mrs. Dawson's target, she's definitely someone special. Let her handle it on her own. I don't want us to get involved and end up as scapegoats."
Rebecca froze at Yasmine's words.
By then, Vespera had already successfully turned the cake into mush. "Ladies, we should quickly leave. I'll get Calvert to pick us up at the banquet hall entrance."
Yasmine echoed in agreement. "Yes, I agree. Let's not get involved."
Vespera made a call to Calvert but was greeted with a mechanical female voice saying, "The number you have dialed is temporarily unavailable."
