"You saw that, didn't you? He doesn't have feelings for Nancy. Just stop pushing it," Samuel whispered, trying to calm the fuming Fawn.
"You blockhead, you idiot!" Fawn nearly burst into tears as she twisted his arm. "Nancy's not the problem! The problem is Vespera! Your son's dead set on going to war with us over her!"
"Honey, it's not us," Samuel said, summoning a bit of courage. "Maybe… We should just try accepting her?"
Fawn fell silent, then shot him a glare.
Samuel swore she nearly burned a hole through him with that look. That night, he earned himself a one-way ticket to the guest room.
Fawn got up and went looking for Nancy. She found her out in the garden.
"Mrs. Reid, what now?"
"I don't know…" Fawn muttered.
"If I lose just like this, Dominic's going to double down. He'll push even harder to make you accept Vespera. Mr. Reid Senior is already wavering, we can't let him win." Nancy clenched her fists.
Love, once twisted by obsession and rejection, no longer resembled love at all.
Eyes red, Nancy paced across the lawn, her whole posture tight with frustration. Fawn couldn't help but worry. "Nancy…"
"I've got it," Nancy said suddenly, walking back over. "I'll go to the banquet with you tomorrow night, and then I'll leave Halewick. And after that…"
She leaned in and whispered something into Fawn's ear.
"What? That—" Fawn hesitated. "That's not a good idea. If you do that, Dominic will never forgive you."
Meanwhile, out on the highway, Dominic sat in the backseat, staring out at the night through the window.
After a while, his phone rang. He glanced at the screen, frowned, and picked up. "Hello, this is Dominic—what?"

At Rebecca's apartment, Vespera had made dinner, watered the two sun-scorched rose bushes on the balcony, and tidied up the messy living room.
"Whoa, where'd this elf come from?" Rebecca said as she walked through the door, looking exhausted.
Seeing dinner on the table and the chaos around the coffee table cleaned up brought her instant joy.
