Chapter 66
Calista let her tears fall freely, yet she felt no stir of emotion.
Several days passed, and she was finally well enough to move around on her own.
Seizing the moment while Rebecca was gone, she quietly made her way to the billing counter
alone.
“Hi, I’d like to settle the medical bills for these two beds.”
Calista didn’t have much money left. All she wanted was to pay off these bills and leave the
hospital as soon as possible.
The clerk casually quoted a figure–one that was enough to wipe out all of Calista’s savings.
After settling the bills, Calista glanced down at the debit card in her hand. While Lucien and
Ophelia were wrapped up in their little romance, she was still struggling to make ends meet.
She and Lucien truly were from different worlds and didn’t belong together.
She soon wandered over to the vending machine. After browsing through the selections, she
ended up going with a cereal bar.
She hadn’t had one in a long time. When she first married into the Fenwick family, she would
occasionally sneak a bite. But after getting caught and being scolded by Wendy a few times, she
no longer dared to touch those so–called junk foods again.
As if trying to make up for all those years of restraint, she took a big bite out of the cereal bar. The artificial flavors immediately coated her taste buds, yet in that
strange sense of satisfaction.
