Burn Me Once, Burn With Me novel Chapter 327

He lounged lazily, eyelids half-closed, but there was a glint of ice in his gaze.

The affairs of the Capital rarely concerned him. He’d searched for Ruby for ages, yet never had the company summoned him back for anything so urgent that only he could handle it.

If there was some hidden force at play, Sylas didn’t buy it.

He reined in the hint of resentment in his eyes and fixed Ruby with a keen stare. “Rue, if you’re upset about something, you can tell me. Don’t bottle it up.”

Though work in the Capital kept him perpetually on the move, he’d been keeping close tabs on Quinborough lately, especially on the situation between Ruby and Cassian.

“Well, since you’re free, come help me move some things.”

Ruby didn’t stand on ceremony or bother with polite refusals. She simply waved him over.

Sylas’s eyes lit up, and he followed immediately. “Move things? I’m strong, you know; that’s nothing for me.”

As soon as he spoke, a surge of dread swept through Cassian’s chest.

He stepped forward, grabbing Ruby’s wrist—the one holding Mira.

Her hand was cold, as cold as her eyes in that moment.

Ruby slipped out of his grasp with practiced ease, but Cassian wouldn’t give up. He caught her hand again, persistent. “Why are you moving things?”

Ruby paused, lifting her chin at Cassian. “Didn’t you say we should go home? Well, I’m not staying here with Mira anymore. From now on, my home is at Southgarde Estate. I’ll have all of mine and Mira’s things moved out as soon as possible.”

Her words landed like a stone shattering the calm surface of a lake.

“I don’t agree with this!”

“Or is it that you trust Gennifer so much that neither I nor Mira will ever matter to you as much as she does?”

Her voice was icy, distant—like snowmelt trickling down from a mountain peak.

Cassian opened his mouth to reply, but the words caught in his throat.

“I agreed to come back to Northridge Manor for Mira’s safety. And now, for her safety, I’ll leave.”

She turned away, holding Mira close, and headed to the bedroom to pack.

The slam of the door sounded like a slap across Cassian’s face.

Sylas didn’t follow. He stayed where he was, arms crossed, giving Cassian a sidelong look.
