Burn Me Once, Burn With Me novel Chapter 312

Gennifer’s sudden appearance sent a shockwave through Victor’s usually calm demeanor. He looked up at her, eyes locked with a sharp intensity, as if searching her face for hidden answers.

Those people had kidnapped and tortured Ruby—not for money, but to make him lose the trial to Farrar. Which meant…

Victor’s pupils widened in realization.

Was this Farrar’s doing, or Gennifer’s?

His gaze turned dark and piercing, the easy elegance he usually carried now clouded as if a drop of ink had stained clear water.

He stepped forward, eyes flicking from Farrar to Gennifer, an unmistakable hostility radiating from him.

The tension jolted Ramsey out of his thoughts. He quickly grabbed Victor’s arm, shooting him a warning look.

“This is a courthouse,” he hissed under his breath.

Ramsey knew Victor’s anger was justified, but no matter what, this wasn’t the place for a confrontation.

“You, worried? I thought nothing scared you,” came a mocking voice from behind Gennifer.

An older man with a neatly trimmed beard stepped forward, his eyes full of derision as he looked Ramsey up and down.

Ramsey’s face darkened, but he only scoffed and turned away, as if the man before him didn’t even deserve his attention.

The display only made Gennifer’s mentor angrier. His hands clenched tightly at his sides.

How could someone who’d fallen so low, nearly cast out of the legal world, still act this arrogant?

“We’re leaving,” Victor said suddenly, his voice steady but frosty, like the wind sweeping down from a snow-capped mountain.

He slid his phone back into his pocket.

Bennett had just texted: Cassian had found Ruby and brought her to the hospital.

The trial was set, and Victor had no reason to linger. He wanted nothing more than to see Ruby for himself.

Ramsey caught the look on Victor’s face and understood instantly. He followed him, ready to leave.

“Don’t forget to clear our name on social media, Mr. Hargrove!” someone called after them.

Victor paused for a split second, but didn’t look back as he kept walking.

Farrar snapped his mouth shut, then burst out laughing, practically giddy as he tried to pat Gennifer on the shoulder. “Miss Gennifer, I’m impressed—you really delivered today!”

The door’s soft click drew everyone’s attention.

Cassian arched an eyebrow, signaling them to continue their work.

“How is she?” Victor approached, his voice low as he came to stand beside Cassian.

It was the first time the two of them had spoken so calmly in such a closed space.

“Multiple abrasions, but nothing internal,” Cassian replied, knowing full well Victor had played a part in rescuing Ruby.

Even though it didn’t sound serious, Victor couldn’t help the ache in his chest as he looked at Ruby, lying there with her eyes closed.

She was already dressed in a hospital gown, her face pale, and the only exposed skin—the back of her hand—was covered in cuts and bruises.

Victor had no idea how many more injuries were hidden beneath the sheets.

His eyes trembled. He bit his lip and looked away.

“When will she wake up?” he asked the doctor.

“After such prolonged abuse, Miss Ruby’s body is severely depleted. She hasn’t eaten or drunk anything for some time, so we’re giving her fluids now. With any luck, she may regain consciousness by tonight,” the doctor answered plainly, not trying to soften the truth.
