Outsiders only knew about her accomplishments as a lawyer. Few realized Ruby was just as fluent in music and medicine, her talents spanning far wider than anyone guessed.
She walked slowly, her gaze sweeping across the first row of shelves before she paused in front of the second.
Just as she suspected, the second row was crammed with files on the Veyne & Co. mysteries, masterpieces from famed artists around the world, and rare medical tomes that had barely survived the centuries.
Finishing her perusal, Ruby felt a storm of emotion rising in her chest.
These two rows weren't just the most valuable treasures in the entire room—they were priceless. Any one of these books, if auctioned, could fetch an astronomical sum.
She forced herself to breathe evenly, masking her excitement behind a calm expression.
"How secure is this room?" she asked, her tone all business.
The attendant blinked in surprise. Hardly anyone ever asked that, but he straightened with confidence. "Military-grade security. Even the lock on the door is classified technology."
He thumped his chest in reassurance, and Ruby finally allowed herself to relax.
"Can you continue to keep these things in your care? I'll cover the fees," she said.
Though puzzled, he nodded. "Of course."
Most people, faced with such a windfall, couldn't wait to haul their inheritance away. He couldn't help but give the woman before him a second, even a third glance.
She was shattering all his expectations.
By the time Ruby left, her newly issued card had millions deposited in it.
Even though her old accounts had been unfrozen, she transferred everything to the new card and abandoned the old ones for good.
And because it was a fresh account, even with full identification, she couldn't accept all the transfers at once. The funds had to be staggered.
With millions now at her fingertips, Ruby's entire demeanor eased—she visibly relaxed.
But just as she reached the curb to hail a cab, a gaudy pink Maserati screeched to a halt in front of her, blocking her path.
Startled by the wild maneuvering, Ruby clutched Mira and stepped back quickly.
But the car refused to budge, persistently blocking her way.
The showy, deliberate move was all too familiar. Ruby stopped, steeling herself.
No surprise—this was meant for her.
The car door swung open, and a pair of long, slender legs emerged.
Gennifer stepped out, fixing Ruby with a hard stare.
Ruby narrowed her eyes.
"How much did she leave you?" Gennifer's words burst out, sharp and confrontational.
With a furious cry, she raised her hand to slap Ruby.
But before her palm could connect, a large hand shot out and clamped around her wrist, stopping her cold.
"Miss, this is a public place. What do you think you're doing?" a low male voice asked, calm but edged with a chill that sent a shiver down the spine.
Gennifer froze.
In that instant, Ruby seized her chance. She jerked her hand up and landed a hard slap across Gennifer's face.
The blow was so forceful that Gennifer's head snapped to the side, her vision swimming.
Still dazed, Gennifer barely registered Ruby's voice, as cold and sharp as ice.
"Gennifer, don't try me. I haven't even started settling our old scores, and here you are, throwing yourself at me."
Ruby reached out and squeezed Gennifer's cheek, forcing her to meet Ruby's fierce glare.
"Since the day I walked out of prison, I stopped being a Grayson. Without that name, I have nothing left to protect. I won't go easy on you—or any of your precious family."
A wild, dangerous smile broke across Ruby's face.
Gennifer recoiled in shock. Was this really the Ruby she'd always known?
"What's going on here?" someone demanded.
