"You can bring Mira along," Sylas said quickly.
"I'll help you look after her."
He could sense Ruby's hesitation, so he added, "If you'd like, I'll have someone arrange the outfits for you both. You won't have to worry about a thing."
"Mira, do you want to go?" Ruby looked down at Mira, giving her tiny hand a gentle squeeze, letting her make the choice.
Sylas held his breath on the other end of the line.
With his status, no one would dare question him turning up at the auction without a date. Still… he couldn't deny his own selfish wish.
Just then, a child's laughter bubbled through the phone.
Mira's big, dark eyes sparkled with curiosity and excitement as she gazed up at Ruby.
Ruby's heart softened. Someday, she'd reclaim what was rightfully hers, and Mira deserved to see the world, not just be hidden away. It was time to let her live boldly.
"Sylas, send me the time and place."
Hearing that, Sylas felt as if a cloud of happiness had landed right on him, leaving him almost dizzy.
"Alright." He tried to keep his tone even, but the tremor in his voice made Ruby wonder if he had a sore throat.
As soon as their call ended, Sylas dialed another number.
"Uncle, I'll be bringing a plus-one to the auction."
Wine sloshed into a tall glass. Cassian, the "Uncle" in question, swirled the rose-colored liquid with elegant fingers and chuckled. "It's only an auction, Sylas. Why are you making a formal announcement just to bring a date?"
Still, a shadow lingered between his brows.
When did Sylas arrive in Quinborough?
And even if his mother found out—so what?
"Good. Handle it yourself. For something this minor, just let Bennett know."
"And when did you get to Quinborough, anyway?"
Sylas raised an eyebrow, glancing up at the night sky, phone in hand. "There's been a lot of infighting in the family. Mother told me not to reach out, so I wouldn't drag you into the mess here. That's why I didn't call right away. I'm staying at my ‘cousin's' place."
Cassian understood.
"As long as you're safe. If anything happens, you're always welcome at the Veyne estate."
"Will do."
"Oh, and Uncle—rumor has it your wife's been released. Will you be bringing her to the auction, or is your firm's lady lawyer representing you again?"
