Burn Me Once, Burn With Me novel Chapter 110

The man on the phone was Bennett, Cassian's personal assistant.

On the other end, the landlady's voice was especially polite. "Miss Ruby is very pleased. I've arranged the apartment for her as Mr. Veyne instructed."

Bennett nodded. "Good. I'll let Mr. Veyne know. You'll get everything he promised."

The landlady chuckled delightedly. "Thank you so much. But truth be told, I genuinely like that young lady."

Bennett took it as a polite formality and ended the call with a brief acknowledgment.

Cassian's gaze landed on Bennett's hand as he set down his phone. "What did she say?"

The pen in Cassian's hand, which had been racing across a contract, paused mid-signature.

Bennett gave a succinct report. "She's settled in."

At that, something flickered in Cassian's eyes.

He lowered his head, turning his attention back to the document. His lashes drooped, shadowing the sudden distraction in his gaze.

"Alright."

His voice was low and quiet, so soft it almost vanished into the air.

Bennett returned to silent efficiency, assisting from the side.

Some time passed before Cassian put down his pen. He'd read through all the documents in front of him, but his usual work rhythm was noticeably off.

He rubbed his brow in frustration. "Assign a few more people to watch over her."

Bennett was momentarily taken aback, clearly recalling the recent string of incidents around Mrs. Veyne. His expression grew serious. "Yes, I'll arrange for a few to move in nearby."

Cassian nodded.

Thud, thud—

Suddenly, there was a sharp knock at the office door.

Bennett hesitated, but at Cassian's approving glance, he went to open it.

Gennifer was standing in the hallway, eyes brimming with unshed tears.

Bennett's fingers twitched. What now?

"Miss Gennifer, do you need something? Mr. Veyne is busy at the moment," he said, quickly slipping on a polite, professional smile.

Gennifer ignored him completely. Her gaze went straight past Bennett, locking onto Cassian, who was still looking down. In a trembling voice, she called out, "Cassian!"

From across the room, Gennifer saw the faint curve of his lips, and her heart fluttered.

Of course. Outwardly, people liked to joke about how close she and Cassian were, but nobody knew the truth better than she did.

Cassian only ever sought her out to handle difficult cases or tricky situations. Most of the time, it was her chasing after him, not the other way around.

But for someone as aloof as he was, he never pushed her away—and even allowed her to stand by his side. Wasn't it just recently, when she'd suffered a minor scratch, that he'd raised an uproar at the hospital and ordered the entire staff to examine her?

Surely, that meant he cared.

But lately…

Gennifer clenched her fists, recalling how Cassian had been avoiding her, how her every attempt to get close had been met with a cold shoulder.

And it was all because of Ruby.

Ever since Cassian had found out where Ruby was, he barely spent any time with her at all.

No. She couldn't just sit back and accept this. She had to fight for him.

A calculating glint flashed in Gennifer's eyes, quickly hidden behind a mask of innocence. She flashed a sweet, almost pleading smile, her tone deliberately gentle and ingratiating.
