I’ve been going to Cade’s place frequently for the past year, so it has become a familiar path. The roads were quiet at this hour, and it didn’t do me any good. I could see Luna all around the car. Her image had stayed burned behind my eyelids, and I couldn’t shake it off.
By the time I reached Cade’s house, I hesitated at the steps. Then, I knocked. It didn’t take long before the door swung open. However, instead of Cade, Rowan stood there.
My brows raised. “What are you doing here?”
At the same time, he tilted his head and echoed, “What are you doing here?”
We stared at each other for a few seconds, both equally confused. Then, his mouth twitched. “You know, if you wanted to join the babysitting club, you should’ve called first.”
I frowned, but before I could respond, Cade appeared behind him, holding a small towel over his shoulder and looking mildly surprised. “Abel?”
I looked past Rowan. “I may have come to the wrong door. Where’s Tessa and Arden?”
“Oh, come on,” Rowan said, grabbing my arm and pulling me inside before I could back away. “Don’t run off. We might not be as good as our wives at giving advice, but you came here, so clearly, you’ve got something eating at you.”
Cade chuckled from behind him. “They had a girls‘ day today. We’re taking care of the kids.”
He dropped onto a chair across from me, Rowan taking the spot beside him. “You came all this way without warning,” Cade added. “What’s wrong?”
I sighed, dragging a hand down my face before sitting heavily on the couch. “I have a problem.”
That got their attention.
Rowan leaned forward, elbows on his knees. “The kind of problem that involves blood or the kind that involves feelings?”
“Both,” I muttered.
He winced. “Ah. The dangerous kind.”

Cade didn’t even hesitate. He just looked at me and then smirked like he’d already solved the mystery. “You’re in love.”
I stared at him. “What?”
Rowan snorted. “Called it.”
Cade shrugged, crossing his arms after high–fiving with Rowan. “You wouldn’t drive here this late unless it was serious. You’re not bleeding, so it’s not a fight. You’re not drunk, so it’s not guilt. That only leaves love.”
I exhaled through my nose, trying to ignore the way my heart jumped. “That’s not-”
“Oh, it is,” Rowan interrupted, his grin widening. “I can tell by the look in your eyes. It’s the same look Cade had when Arden first entered Elite.”
I glared at both of them, but it was no use. I leaned back, staring at the ceiling. “It’s not supposed to happen like this.”
The two of them didn’t speak, allowing me to think for a while.
I hesitated. “She trusts me,” I finally said. “Completely. And I don’t know what to do with that.”
“I’ve done things,” I continued quietly. “Things I can’t take back. But she looks at me like I’m still someone worth believing in.”
The silence stretched. Then Cade said softly, “Love doesn’t ask if you’re ready. It just happens.”
“Yeah,” Rowan added, leaning back with a sigh. “And once it does, you either run from it or you start fighting to deserve it.”
I glanced at them both.
Cade smiled faintly. “You already know which one you’re doing, Abel. You wouldn’t be here if you weren’t trying to make sure you don’t screw it up.”
I pressed my palms together, staring at the floor, the ache in my chest deepening and easing all at once. Maybe he was right. Maybe I was already too far gone to pretend otherwise.
Cade stood and patted my shoulder. “You’ll figure it out,” he said. “You always do.”
“Don’t bother denying it. You’ve got that stupidly peaceful look on your face,” Rowan added.
I
gave him a sharp look. “You’re one to talk.”

“Exactly,” Rowan said easily, leaning forward on his knees. “That’s coming from someone who had his child hidden away from him for four years. I wasted time pretending I didn’t care enough, and all it did was hurt the people who actually did.”
I clicked my tongue in irritation, though part of me knew he was right. “I’m not like you, you bastard.”
“I can’t even become like you if I wanted,” I muttered, leaning back against the couch.
They both fell quiet then.
I already knew the truth.
I did like her. I knew that the moment she fell asleep beside me earlier, trusting me enough to rest her head just inches away from my hand. She wasn’t hard to love. In fact, loving her had been the easiest thing I’d ever done.
But that was the problem.
It wasn’t her fault. It was me. It had always been me.
Cade finally broke the silence. “What do you mean by that?”
I looked between the two of them. They’d both lived through their own hells. They’d earned my respect, and more importantly, my trust. Maybe they deserved the truth.
I exhaled slowly. “I never told anyone about this.”
Both of them leaned in.
“But I guess… you two are different.”
“I have a curse.”
Rowan frowned while Cade’s brow furrowed. Neither of them interrupted me. I swallowed hard. The words were knives I’d been carrying in silence for years. “The one who bears my child and gives birth… is bound to give her last breath.”
Rowan’s eyes widened slightly, shock flickering across his face. Cade went utterly still, his hands curling into fists.
“What…?” Rowan finally managed.
“She dies,” I said flatly. “She dies because of me.”

“I didn’t believe it at first,” I continued, staring at the floor. “But my father is the testament of it
all.”
Rowan’s jaw worked soundlessly before he finally said, “So you’re telling me… that if you ever
“If I ever let myself love her fully,” I cut in quietly, “if she ever carried my child, she’d die because of it.”
Cade leaned forward. “And Luna doesn’t know.”
I shook my head. “She doesn’t. I don’t know what to do if she does.”
I pressed my elbows to my knees, lowering my head into my hands. The memory of her smile flashed behind my eyes.
“And I’m not sure,” I said, my voice breaking for the first time that night, “if I can do that to her anymore. Because you’re right.” I looked up, meeting their eyes, my throat tightening.
“I love her too much to be able to let her
go now.”
