“Mom,” Susanna said, her voice filled with disappointment. “When did you become so cruel?”
“What did you say? You’re calling me cruel?” Darleen’s face turned pale with rage.
“To Starla, you are cruel,” Susanna cut her off without hesitation. “You look down on her because of her background. You doubt her, and you humiliate her.”
As her daughter, she didn't mince words.
Darleen was trembling with anger. “You call me cruel? Look at what she’s done! Brinley just had a major surgery, and because of Starla, her wound has reopened twice in two days!”
“What has she done?” Susanna shot back. “Fairfax was with Brinley when she gave birth, while his own wife lost their baby. And you expected her to just sit back and take your abuse? If it were me, I would have killed you all by now!”
“You… you…” Darleen was so furious she felt dizzy. “I already told you…”
“You said her miscarriage report was fake?” Susanna scoffed. “Fake! Did you not see how pale she was at the hospital the other day?”
Darleen was silent.
The elevator doors opened, and Susanna angrily shook off her mother’s hand and stepped inside.
“Wait, you…” Darleen started, but it was too late. This girl was infuriating!
Susanna’s gaze was cold and clear. “After what you all did to her while she was miscarrying, you can’t blame her for what she’s doing to Brinley now.”
The doors slid shut, leaving Darleen standing there, momentarily stunned. Susanna’s confirmation that Starla had indeed miscarried was unexpected, but it stirred no guilt within her. In fact, a moment later, she had already convinced herself it was a lie.
“That’s ridiculous,” she muttered to herself as she turned back towards the room. “She was never pregnant. How could she have miscarried?”
