Before Jeremy could leave, two small arms wrapped around his thigh. With his expression turning cold, he looked down.
The same little girl who had clutched Lydia's hem now hugged his leg, staring at him with a goofy grin.
Melody gasped and hurried over. She tried to carry the child, but the little girl clung tightly. Since she couldn't use force, she said awkwardly, "I think she likes you."
Jeremy had no use for a toddler's affection. "Get her off me," he mentioned coldly.
Bending down, she coaxed the girl.
The girl was so small that she barely reached Jeremy's knee. With bright eyes, she looked up and called in a sweet voice, "Sir.."
Jeremy's brow twitched. This time, he didn't order Melody to take the girl away, resulting in a silent standoff between them both.
Seeing they were fine, Melody went to help Lydia.
…
When they finished cleaning, Melody returned and saw the little girl seated on a makeshift seesaw in a corner.
Jeremy stood at the other end.
Each time the girl sat, he pressed down with one hand, then let her spring back up. She squealed with laughter.
The scene looked oddly peaceful. Melody watched a moment longer than she meant to.
Jeremy wiped his hands, the tight line of his mouth easing a bit.
Just then, his phone buzzed. He typed a reply, only to see another notification.
Hours earlier, Melody had transferred money to him.
His eyes narrowed and the calm he had found churned again, stronger than before.
He stared at her, not sure where the anger came from. Forcing it down, he asked, "Where did you get the money to repay me?"
Melody paused and then said, "Felicia lent it to me."
