Melody said, "I promised I'd pay you back."
Lydia had told her not to let Jeremy spend his own money, and Melody agreed, so she never mentioned the repayment.
The orphanage faced enough trouble and might lose Regallo's funding, leaving the kids' health at stake. She wouldn't add to Lydia's burdens.
She still managed to come up with a hundred grand. She modeled for Alexis to pay it back, but her ear surgery would have to be postponed again.
Jeremy's face revealed nothing, his dark eyes fixed on her. "Fine."
Melody added, "Thank you for today. Without you, they would have forced those tests."
"There will not be a next time," he said coldly. "I didn't come to meddle in someone else's mess."
"I know," she answered.
Jeremy hated wasting time on things that had nothing to do with him. Still, he had helped, and she couldn't just ignore that.
Melody wasn't someone who couldn't tell right from wrong. Even though Jeremy's words had been harsh, she still knew she should thank him.
She said seriously, "I owe you one. If you ever need me, I'll be there."
The summer evening was already warm, which only made Jeremy more irritated.
Jeremy glanced at her and said indifferently, "I won't need it."
His mood soured further. Every word from her seemed to irritate him.
Without another look, he got in the car. He didn't invite her to join him, and Melody didn't dare to move.
He drove off without hesitation.
Melody pressed her lips together and texted Felicia.
When she had borrowed the money that afternoon, Felicia had said to meet for dinner once she was free.
Jeremy gave no reply.
It had most likely clung to him at the orphanage. She was the only one with hair that long.
Her hair was black and silky, always slipping off his sleeve.
Jeremy's silence confirmed it. Harold grinned. "Dr. Chesson, you're finally falling in love. I told you, Melody's too sweet to resist."
A hair on the shoulder meant they had been close. Harold understood what had happened.
"Take some time for her," he advised. "Work kept you busy before, but you can't stay that way when you're dating. Don't act like a robot."
Harold knew Jeremy well. Until now, their engagement had seemed purely arranged, nothing more.
Harold had always hoped they would become a real couple because Melody was truly adorable.
