Melody knew Andrew cared a lot about appearances in front of the Chesson family, so at that moment, only Jeremy could help the orphanage.
She grabbed his sleeve without thinking, afraid he would turn and leave.
Jeremy hated being touched, yet when he met Melody's clear eyes, the irritation he should have felt never surfaced. In fact, he almost felt calm.
His Adam's apple bobbed. Her pitiful look made him want to tease her. She seemed soft enough to crumble with a single poke.
Even so, professional duty came first.
He glanced at the children behind her.
To be honest, none of them were good-looking. They were all underfed, and their clothes hung loosely on them. A few stared blankly, showing clear signs of developmental delay.
Still, every shirt was spotless. Someone had taken great care of them.
Andrew worried Jeremy might speak up, so he hurried to say, "Mel, this is orphanage business. Don't bother Jeremy."
Jeremy mentioned indifferently, "If they were real specialists, none of them would agree to that idea."
He looked at the youngest child, who was maybe three or four years old. The child clutched Lydia's hem, looking at them with a mix of confusion and fear.
Jeremy's cold gaze shifted to the men in white coats. "You want to put a toddler under full anesthesia for a scope? Are you serious?"
"Jeremy..." Andrew tried to interrupt.
Jeremy went on, "I understand using an endoscope for acute poisoning, but it's been days. The kids have been treated. A scope now only adds pain."
The words were blunt and harsh, yet Andrew didn't argue.
Lydia glanced at Jeremy. "That doesn't seem right."
Melody turned. Jeremy still stood where she had left him. Her lashes trembled as she said, "If you have things to do, you can head home."
He had called the orphanage a dump on the drive, and she knew he disliked it.
Jeremy lowered his dark eyes, unreadable. His hair had grown, falling over his brow, making his gaze look deeper. He looked at Melody and didn't speak.
Truthfully, he had been driving home, but when he noticed the pastry box Ophelia had packed for Melody, he turned the car around almost against his own logic.
He didn't feel that anything was wrong with him. Just like he said, leaving the pastries with him would be troublesome.
Now that he had delivered it, he should leave.
