Henry Moore was not her husband. However, during Angel’s kindergarten registration, Monique listed Henry’s as the father—she did it for Angel’s sake.
There was no response from Henry. Monique then gave Miss Christine an awkward smile and said, “Thanks.”
Monique did not shut the idea down. Instead, she reveled in the thought of having Henry Moore as her husband.
“Say goodbye to your Mommy and Daddy,” Miss Christine told Angel.
“Bye bye!” Angel waved her hand at Monique and Henry. She reminded them before they parted, “Remember to pick me up later!”
Henry and Monique walked back to the car and Monique got into the driver’s seat.
She drove faster than usual as she was running late for work. She kept an eye on Henry who was seated at the back. The morning sun shone onto the man who was focused on his phone.
Monique remembered the first time she witnessed him driving at night.
Her life was turned upside down after meeting Henry.
It was a blessing in disguise. She did not want to think of the future.
The car ride was silent but his comforting presence soothed her.
If she was not in a rush, she would have made sure the drive took longer than it should.
“Keep your eyes on the road,” Henry uttered lazily.
He noticed her gaze from the rearview mirror.
The rumors about her being Chairman Moore’s woman reached every ear in the company. Her absence coincided with the chairman which spoke volumes.
The employees in the planning department gathered around Amelia’s desk for a discussion.
“Monique really thinks she’s the chairman’s wife, huh? She skipped work yesterday and hasn’t shown up today. On leave again?”
“She’s the woman of the hour for now. Why would she care about an aide position?”
“Chairman’s wife? Please! The woman doesn’t have the background or looks to marry him. He must be tired of gourmet food and wanted a taste of street food. She’ll be gone soon after she warmed his bed.”
“Clearly she’s not here to work. This is her first week and she was hardly present in the office. Took a day off and went back early! Who knows if she’ll even show up today?”
