Orion lowered his gaze. "Impossible."
He would never agree to the Sinclair family's conditions.
Thaddeus nodded in agreement. "Exactly. If we throw enough money at this, we should be able to find a suitable matching kidney in half a month."
With the vast resources of top-tier elite families, it had to be possible.
Orion offered a bitter smile. "Let's hope so."
Thaddeus looked at him sympathetically. "Eat something, man. Lemon is still furious, and she won't give you the time of day right now. But once this case is successfully closed and the Sinclairs are made to pay, she'll understand."
Orion met his friend's eyes. "The Everhart family was responsible for the cover-up back then. We bear responsibility too."
Thaddeus frowned. "The Sinclair family really ruins everything they touch."
If Lemira pursued this to the bitter end, Mrs. Amanda would technically be an accomplice.
Thaddeus looked at Orion. "This isn't as complicated as it seems. As long as the Langston family is willing to settle, Mrs. Amanda will be fine. The main liability falls on the Sinclairs, and Lemon knows that."
"But what right do I have to ask her to settle?" Orion murmured.
"You saved her life back then, didn't you? Did you forget?"
Thaddeus knew the truth. "Wait, haven't you told Lemon yet?"
Orion remained silent.
Thaddeus groaned in frustration. "You need to tell her! She has amnesia; she has no idea who pulled her from the wreckage."
"I refuse to use that to blackmail her."
Orion didn't want Lemira to accept him out of a sense of obligation. He didn't need her gratitude.
"How is that blackmail?"
Thaddeus was exasperated, but the stubborn man in front of him simply refused to yield.
He glared at his best friend. "Fine. Keep torturing yourself."
He wanted to see how long Orion could keep this up.
Outside the window, the autumn wind carried a bitter chill. The leaves were turning yellow and falling to the ground, a stark contrast to the vibrant, lively green of summer.
When Lemira woke up, she realized her congestion had worsened. Her fever hadn't returned, but the cold still made her feel miserable.
Her phone rang. It was the Lyria Central Precinct. "Ms. Langston, we've uncovered some new leads regarding your parents' car crash. If you have time, please come down to the precinct."
Lemira didn't think much of it and headed straight there.
It wasn't until she arrived that she learned what the "new leads" actually were.
When her eyes landed on the lawyer, her stomach dropped.
Of course. Now that the Everhart family was implicated, she absolutely had to find a new attorney.
Otherwise, how could Mr. Alfred defend the Everharts while simultaneously representing the Langstons in prosecuting them?
It was a blatant conflict of interest.
Lemira looked straight past Orion and locked eyes with the lawyer. "Can I trust your professional ethics, Mr. Alfred?"
Mr. Alfred looked deeply conflicted. He didn't answer, instead shooting a helpless glance at Orion. Who could have predicted the case would spiral into this?
The Everhart family had been dragged into the mess.
A lawyer couldn't represent both the plaintiff and the defendant.
Orion looked down at Lemira, his gaze somber. "Mr. Alfred will remain the legal representative for the Langstons."
Lemira gave him a mocking half-smile. "And why should I trust you?"
Orion said nothing.
He expertly sidestepped her question. "Mr. Alfred just accompanied me here temporarily."
