Seeing Sebastian approach, Lemira's stomach tightened into a knot.
She braced herself for whatever news the attorney had gathered.
Judging by the bleak theories they had discussed, she knew it wasn't going to be a miraculous save.
Sebastian met Lemira's eyes, his expression heavy. "I'm sorry. I pushed back as hard as I could, but between Evelina's sudden death and her mother's lawyer filing an official petition... it's going to sway the judge's final sentencing."
Deep down, Lemira had already accepted this inevitability.
Hearing it confirmed aloud, she managed a strained, bitter smile. To fight so hard and come so close, only to have the rug pulled out at the one-yard line, was a tough pill to swallow.
Sebastian continued, "I ran a background check on the attorney. We don't have much to go on. He's an out-of-towner, completely unknown in our local circuits."
If he were a prominent Orvin attorney, they could have tracked his connections instantly. An obscure lawyer from a different district meant piecing together his trail would take time they didn't have.
Orion interjected. "Where is he from?"
"A small rural town. Place called Oakhaven."
Lemira noted, "Isn't Oakhaven where Evelina's family is from? Has her mother been hiding out there this whole time?"
Orion frowned thoughtfully. "When we ran the initial background checks on Evelina and Hale, we sent investigators to their hometown. They didn't find a single trace of the mother."
Thaddeus nodded in agreement. "And according to the locals, Hale and his crew were always petty thieves, constantly in and out of lockup. The rest of their extended family cut ties with them years ago. Nobody there knows anything about them anymore."
"Keep a tail on that lawyer," Orion ordered. "If we follow him, he might lead us straight to the mother."
Since the lawyer had just wrapped up his business at the courthouse, his next stop would logically be to report back to his client.
Orion assured Lemira, "Don't worry, my team is already on it. The second he makes a move, I'll know."
Lemira nodded. It was the best they could do for now.
