Hale immediately masked his panic. "No, nothing like that. I'm just worried that since the baby isn't a Langston, you people are going to abuse her."
Lemira let out a sharp scoff. "Did you honestly think we wanted her carrying a Langston heir? Finding out that kid wasn't ours was the best news we've had all year. If anything, we should be thanking her for it."
Hale bristled at the blatant sarcasm in her tone.
He spoke up defensively. "Evelina grew up in your household. If she turned out this way, it's a reflection of your family's failure to raise her properly. You share the blame for this."
Lucian choked on the accusation, his temper flaring. "We treated her like absolute royalty her entire life! We gave her so much attention that we completely neglected our actual flesh and blood!"
Lemira stared at Hale, a mocking smirk playing on her lips. "Don't pretend you didn't know that. I guarantee you've been quietly keeping tabs on how lavishly she lived with us all these years."
Hale shifted uncomfortably, realizing he was caught, and fell silent.
He absolutely knew how luxurious Evelina's life had been with the Langstons, which was precisely why he had never bothered to intervene.
Lucian cut in sharply. "As long as you continue to cooperate, our deal stands."
Reluctantly, Hale backed down. "You better keep your word."
Lemira stepped out into the hallway for some air, only to find Susanna sobbing uncontrollably in front of Amanda.
The writing was on the wall. Amelia's fate was sealed, and no amount of tears was going to change the judge's mind.
Lemira walked over, looking down at Susanna. "You could throw yourself off the roof right now, and it still wouldn't change the verdict."
Susanna looked up, her eyes puffy and red. "I just want my mother to live! She's going to spend the rest of her life rotting in a cell. Isn't that punishment enough?"
