Lemira and Stella comfortably took a few steps back, letting him handle it.
But Caleb didn't charge forward.
He glanced over his shoulder. "Take Stella to class. I'll escort you guys in a minute."
Lemira wanted to ask why he wasn't moving, but prioritizing Stella's safety, she didn't argue and pulled her friend toward the campus gates.
The second they moved, Mrs. Waverly's thugs rushed in.
Any man who stepped within Caleb's reach was incapacitated in a single, brutal strike—a snapped arm here, a shattered knee there.
As Lemira walked away, the sickening crunch of breaking bones echoed behind her.
She noted his lethal efficiency. He truly was a seasoned mercenary; every move was designed to destroy.
Soon, the two girls were safely inside the university grounds.
Even the most arrogant thugs wouldn't dare storm Orvin University, considering the heavy political backing the institution held.
Caleb stood casually by the entrance, staring down the remaining men who hesitated to approach.
Mrs. Waverly stomped forward, livid. "You got lucky all those years ago. But if you cross the Waverlies again, I will make sure you die screaming this time!"
Caleb met her hysterical glare with eyes that were utterly dead. Her threats didn't even register as noise.
Instead, his gaze held nothing but profound contempt.
Catching that look, her rage spiked. "A piece of gutter trash like you thinks he deserves Stella? You're just a gold-digging parasite trying to leech off her wealth. I've always seen right through you!"
"You're out of line!"
Stella stormed back toward the gate, shaking with anger. "You say he only wants my money? What about you?! You're the real parasite here!"
Mrs. Waverly swayed, overcome by a rush of absolute fury, and collapsed in a dead faint.
Stella didn't even spare her a second glance, turning on her heel and marching back into campus. The moment her aunt had kidnapped her and tried to extort her inheritance, any remaining familial ties had been permanently severed.
Lemira caught up to her, noticing Stella's eyes were red with tears.
"It's over now," she said softly.
"It's because I was so weak and cowardly back then. I almost got him killed, and I didn't even know... I actually resented him for leaving."
