“But that’s not fair to you. That bitch Evelina did it on purpose, I saw it with my own eyes.”
“I know. Things like this have happened countless times since we were kids. Thank you for standing up for me and forcing them to apologize, but in the end, you’re the one who would have been affected.”
That was why Lemira had pulled Stella away, to prevent any damaging rumors from spreading.
Stella’s eyes welled up. “I’m sorry. I used to misunderstand you.”
Only by witnessing firsthand the injustices Lemira faced could she truly understand what she had been through.
Lemira gave a small, weary sigh. “It’s fine. I stopped caring about them a long time ago. By the way, didn’t you say you were going to break up with Asher?”
“I brought it up with my family, but they said it was a minor issue and told me to just talk things over with Asher.”
Stella’s expression turned helpless. “The engagement isn’t easy to break, but I’ll find a way.”
“Asher is the type who cares most about his pride. If you keep opposing him, he’ll likely get fed up and break up with you himself.”
Seeing Stella’s predicament, Lemira guessed that she must be facing difficulties within the Waverly family as well.
Just then, Mrs. Waverly arrived and went straight to Stella. “Why aren’t you with Mr. Langston?”
Stella replied obediently, “I was just about to go.”
The sight made Lemira’s gaze turn colder.
Asher noticed Mrs. Waverly’s arrival and immediately walked over. “Mrs. Waverly.”
Mrs. Waverly glanced at Asher. “I’ve arranged for a photographer for you today. You two need to put on a good show so the media has something positive to report tomorrow.”
“Of course, Mrs. Waverly. I won’t disappoint you this time. I was even planning to personally measure Stella’s foot data so we can design a custom shoe for her.”
Mrs. Waverly smiled. “That’s a wonderful idea. That’s why I had her come today.”
Stella, however, seemed reluctant. “Edith, I’ve already arranged for a friend to help me with the measurements.”
Mrs. Waverly’s tone sharpened. “Which friend?”
Mrs. Waverly's tone was laced with scorn. She looked at Lemira, thinking no wonder even Sophia had been outshone. This girl was quite capable.
The staff member countered, “Lemira may be young, but she was the top scorer on the national exams. Besides, she’s the one who spearheaded this project.”
“So what if she was the top scorer? Our company is full of them, and they’re still just employees.”
Still unconvinced, Mrs. Waverly stared at Lemira. “It seems some people will do anything to please a woman.”
Lemira knew Mrs. Waverly was talking about Orion.
With a faint smile, she replied, “Mrs. Waverly, I hear you have a keen eye for investment, but it seems you’ve misjudged this time.”
Without waiting for Mrs. Waverly’s reaction, Lemira followed the staff member, her steps light and confident.
Mrs. Waverly’s face darkened with anger. “Asher, I heard there will be a Q&A with reporters after the speech, right? If she can’t answer the technical questions, wouldn’t that be incredibly humiliating?”
She was determined to teach Lemira a lesson today.
